Flintlock vs Percussion ends Sept. 30, 2011

I was trying to sight in my "Buffalo rifle" Saturday and found the front sight is way too tall. I stuck a tack at the very top edge of my target paper for an aiming point and shot at that. I was surprised how good a group I shot off hand with that heavy trigger so I sent it in. :idunno:

    TC hardware

I was looking on the Hawken Shop site and the patchbox is not included in the kit, nor is one that will match the TC inletting available that I found. I think it would look funny with a browned steel butt plate and a brass patchbox, but I think I can find a slightly larger one that would look ok...

    Carving on Hawken?

I looked over a dozen original Hawken rifles at the Cody museum a couple years ago, most were very plain. There was one, however, that was custom made for some foreign prince or something that was very ornate, with lots of carving, engraving, inlays, etc. I don't recall if it was made by Sam and...

    Vent Questions

My flinter is a TC with a Green Mountain barrel that came with a removable liner. I usually remove it as it makes it easier to flush the barrel out in a bucket of water. I used to use patch lube to keep fouling from seizing the liner in, lately I have been using TC's Gorilla Grease anti seize...

    Options for Muzzleloader Storage

I once lived in a house that was pretty isolated and was worried about someone breaking in while I was at work. I took an old water heater, gutted it, and built a nice rack inside to hold my nicer long guns. I sat it in the corner of the garage with some junk piled next to it and would just lift...

    Where there's smoke....

We had a small fire started by a smoldering patch at our club shoot a couple weeks ago. As I was shooting with another group and don't know the fella that started it, I don't know what patch/ lube combo he was using. I use wet patches with LVL or Hoppes and haven't had a problem yet.

    Sighting in Question

Just a personal matter of preference... I find it easier to sight in for 100yds. and hold under for closer ranges. I do more of my shooting at longer ranges and find the sight blocks out smaller targets when holding over. Some will sight on a reference point above the target for holdover but my...

    More blown patches

I am going to try a box of swaged balls with thicker patching, sounds like the ticket. I was wondering mainly about why my patches have holes blown in them with no signs of burning. I have read many times of guys using linin patch material with no problems.

    TC hardware

I recall seeing somewhere a while back a steel hardware kit for a TC Hawken but haven't been able to find it lately. I have a flinter with a GM barrel I would like to brown and install steel hardware. Anyone recall who makes/ sells it? I am not crazy about the brass that TC uses and have never...

    Lyman Hunter Sights

I have very low sights on my target rifle and live in the high desert where it is often very hot and usually very bright sun. I don't have any trouble seeing the sights, though I probably would in the dim woods, especially at dawn and dusk. I like the square outline pistol type rear sight and...

Finding the proper size cleaning jag?

You are not using a dry patch in a dirty bore are you? They will almost always get stuck. I am not familiar with Butch's patches, I just use what I have in my rag bag, often old tee shirts. I use off the shelf jags sized for the caliber and if my patch is too thin double it, too thick, use...

    More blown patches

I am starting with what I consider a moderate load of 60gr of Goex 2f. What were you using as a "plinking" load, and a "stout hunting load"? I find in my other rifles that a snug patch/ball combo works best and have always used a short starter. My reasoning for this combo is that for a deep...

    Dangerous Custom Build

OK, now ya got me thinkin, and it is way too late for that. If the hole was oval, the tap would try to self-center and leave some thin threads at either end. On the other hand, if the hole was eliptical, the tap would try to self-center in the large end leaving no threads on the small side...

    More blown patches

I didn't want to hijack Wolfeyes' thread so started a new one. I have been fooling with an old TC Hawken with the factory 1-48 shallow groove barrel lately. I am using home cast balls from WW that mike out at .492 (same as I have been using in my other 50's for years), I started with .018...

    Non-petroleum based lube/cleaner

I used to use the original Lehigh Valley lube for a patch lube and loved it. When I ran out I searched around and tried various combos of lubes. I use Hoppes Black Powder Cleaner and Lube for a while now for a patch lube. As roundball said, wet the patches with it and shoot all day with no...

    My New BOOM Stick

Have you made it go BOOM yet? If it shoots half as good as it looks you won't be needin' meat from the butcher shop for a long time :hatsoff:
