    Can O’ Worms

I wonder what Lewis & Clark would've said to someone telling them what minimum size rifle caliber and ball weight to use on Elk etc. We are so regulated with overlapping regs that just getting out of bed is violating something somewhere.

    Lead casting, flux, temp, etc

I'm curious how trappers, mtn men, long hunters who cast over a campfire judged lead and mold temp to avoid substandad balls. And did they Flux and with what? Leaving out soldiers who received through a supply chain of I assume commercially produced balls of perfection.

    Heres a challenge for you

Possible I guess but I cant get past the spacing and somewhat round imprint. Unless the barrel was repositioned multiple times on the corner of the vice jaw. Personally my vice jaws have always been smooth. Never had the luxury of the nylon liners always use some scrap soft wood for protection...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Clarify action cover please. Couldn't find any reference for that title on the web. I have a new SS 58 Rem 44 unfired as of yet. Too busy moving freight a to b. Like to read the forum in the sleeper to wind down.

Where’s the best place to buy kinnickkinnick?

I agree 100% BUT! You have to mind your P's & Q's in deed and speech when not alone no matter who it is. I've seen it. I've experienced it.

    4f priming powder...

Chances of one or more in a group being literate is strong I'd say. But lots that couldn't too. This has been alluded to throughout history. Not downing those folks it was the times. Being a reloader of varmint cartridges I well know the value of notes, procedures and bench testing.

    Heres a challenge for you

In the 8th photo there are marks that look suspiciously the same as the serrated face of a framing hammer.

    4f priming powder...

No sarcasm intended but it occurred to me while reading your response and others in the past about note keeping that a big segment of our ancestors couldn't read so I don't think they kept notes on their weapons performance in fact I don't think they did much testing at all (my assumption) not...

Where’s the best place to buy kinnickkinnick?

It may be legal at the state lever in some states but federally especially if you are a gun owner it's a big BIG no-no add to that if you're truck driver, pilot, locomotive engineer etc you can't do you can't have it EVER!!!

Mountain Men movie Short muzzle loaders?

Late "77" my 2nd viewing. 2 of my best friends died in a car accident while I and the brother of one of the deceased were at the movies. We were supposed to be with them to celebrate a birthday. They were running late to pick us up so we split and did our own thing. It's etched in my brain to...

Mountain Men movie Short muzzle loaders?

Those days are gone like it or not. I will quote a certain screen hero circa 1977 "ancient religions and hokey weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side"!!!!

    Shooting all by one’s lonesome

My experience has been that the folks attending the sales counter in the gun dept of chain or big box all encompassing sporting goods retailers are just retail sales clerks and are limited at best in overall firearms experience, knowledge etc. The best LGS I ever experienced was in my home town...

    Shooting all by one’s lonesome

Me too!! There's only 4 people that I actually enjoy to have with me shooting, hunting, archery, fishing, hiking. 2 are now to old and infirm and 2 now live to far away. So now for the last 2 decades+ its just me and I've never been disappointed with the results. And usually I'll call one of the...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Ditto!!! My only sources for for flinter supplies here in SoCal is online. Except for holy black which is a 200+ mile RT gamble. I have a trucker friend who sources my supplies for me. For BP and unmentionables.

Random thread about myths and gun show tales about percussion revolvers......

A large fraction of those who died from BP C&B wounds died from infection, lack of medical care and poorly developed surgical practices not from one shot stops. There are just as many legends of how many bullets men could soak up before they went down. A 2 or 300 ftlb increase in energy on paper...

40 miles there 40 miles back. Depending on your state of residence gas at nearly $7 gallon (as is mine) $15 looks like a break even proposition not counting wear and tear on your vehicle and your time.
