    Rust bluing

Yep, that would be my browning regime as well. I usually use 0000 wet wire wool on the second or third pass to flatten the finish.. it looks like you have removed all the brown, but with a few more passes the brown comes back, but more even than before.. If however you are looking for a black...

How is this shot bag[s] used ?

Yes.. If you look in old Dixon catalogues from the 1900s they are quite common.. Petersoli still make them.. https://www.henrykrank.com/pedersoli-irish-shot-flask-top-1233b/

How is this shot bag[s] used ?

I would think around 1850s, maybe later... Some designs have a screw stop to allow different charges, but this looks like a fixed volume scoop. I would think these would have been custom made.. if you afford a loader, then cost was probably not your prime concern...!

    Pyrodex P?

I have used Pyrodex a couple of times.. barrel corrosion every time even though I cleaned it.. No way will I touch the stuff again!

    Rust bluing

I'm with John on this one... Steam barrels after browning with Laurel Mountain and then card with a proper carding wheel from Brownell, or use wet 0000 wire wool. Only takes 20 mins or so.. rinse & repeat!

How is this shot bag[s] used ?

That is an "Irish" shot pouch.. it is designed to be hung round your neck. It can be used either with the same or different size shot in each side. The idea of the double bag is to balance the weight across your shoulders.. and it should be used in this fashion taking care to draw shot evenly...

    Baker rifle questions

Be aware that the Baker is not a particularly long rifle compared with many early rifles. It was designed for use by light troops and not for standing in formation with a bayonet fitted. There is a true cavalry carbine with a 20" barrel and a side bar and ring swivel for use by mounted troops...

Building a Ferguson Rifle from Rifle Shoppe Part Set

A couple of things... Firstly I have found another Ferguson in Edinburgh Castle. It is in the Museum of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, which are the successors to the North British Dragoons, Ferguson's original regiment. The gun is a military pattern rather than a civil one, but I need to...

    Shotgun came already loaded.

I will reiterate my plea not to leave ML guns loaded and unattended.. we are no longer living in a culture that understands the dangers of ML guns and will handle them with knowledge. The number of "old" loaded guns presents enough of a danger from the past without current users of ML guns...

Cutting dovetail slots for under-lugs and sights - Baker Rifle build

good job.. I did a sort of "halfway house" by milling the slots, but then cutting the dovetails with a three square file with one face ground off.. The bit that gave me nightmares was brazing on the bayonet bar and sling lug.. i used the last of my "old" silver solder on the bar, but had to use...

Westley Richards double barrel shotgun. My grandpas gun I dont know anything about it. Any info would help and is it worth anything??

It's a 16... mostly clay. I do shoot game, but not used the ML for driven as it seems a bit presumptious! I was at Cluny on the 14th! Didn't register there was an MLAGB event there on the 20th..! Need to pay more attention! I used to go to the event when it first started at Leuchers, but...

    Reusable caps

I will again repeat my warning about using matches, toy caps etc as primers.. They all contain potassium chlorate, the residues from which is what eats your barrels if you do not clean them quickly and with a water based detergent cleaner! Can I also point out that crushing or milling many of...

Westley Richards double barrel shotgun. My grandpas gun I dont know anything about it. Any info would help and is it worth anything??

Just to give this thread some legitimacy, this is my Westley Richards.. ( yes it is a real one!) and it is a muzzle loader!

    Drill bits ??

I use quite a lot of stub drills rather than jobber drills. Most gunsmithing does not involve drilling deep holes and the shorter stub drill is more rigid as there is less metal cut away for the flutes. You can get stub drills in most of the variations that you get jobber drills for. I have...

    Shushana Restoration

Hi.. thanks for the response! These are not in my normal scope for restoration! I am trying to decide how much/little to do to it! I need to stop the deterioration and this requires some cleaning as the crud is not doing the surface any favours.. The rozetki are in a fairly delicate state with...

Cutting stock blanks out of a plank

I am lucky to have the use of a large bandsaw in my local engineering club.. makes blank cutting fairly straightforward... I was always taught that the grain should run straight through the wrist and parallel to the bottom edge of the buttstock. If you have the grain parallel to the barrel...

Removing Birchwood Casey Plum Brown barrel finish

.. another vote for Laurel Mountain Forge! Can't get Plum Brown to work after many attempts.. too streaky and uneven. I generally start with a coat of LMF and then almost remove it all with wet 0000 wire wool to flatten the surface. On subsequent coats scrub off with wet denim...

    Ballistol.............

Hi Mike.. Gun cleaners come in basically two forms; solvent based cleaners use a material that will dissolve residues and allow them to be removed in solution, and detergent based cleaners which have a water base and which "traps" oily residues in the solution. Detergents come in many forms...

    Ballistol.............

I think you will find that it is the Potassium Chlorate in the primers that was the main issue. Mercuric primers were abandoned fairly early on, and although mercury does attack steel, particularly along the grain boundaries, it is the chlorate that does the real damage. Chlorate residue is not...

    Ballistol.............

Wearing my serious head.. I tend to separate my gun cleaning into the following groups: 1. Where there is any danger of having used corrosive caps/primers and/or where Pyrodex has been used. In these cases you need to use a water based cleaning regime, preferably hot water, as there is a real...
