selecting a caliber for hunting? small game vs big game

@KIt Take a close look at the Pedersoli Side by Side Slug gun. It is a smooth bore 12 ga that is capable of taking any large game in North America. It can also be loaded down with shot to take birds and small game. I’m saving to purchase this gun myself so yes, I am biased, but I believe it can...

    Houston, we have a problem...

@JamesA I’ve read through this entire thread and want to say you’re not experiencing anything unusual shooting true black powder. As you’ve already learned, black powder fouls much more than any of the substitutes you can use. You stated you like the accuracy of Schutzen but dislike having to...

Which side to carry possible bag and powder horn

Right hand shooter… Possibles bag on right, knife on left… rifle carried in crook of left arm (if hunting alone). If hunting/walking with someone else, rifle carried on sling or in right hand with muzzle pointed down.

No matter which rifle you ultimately choose, start here along with the afore mentioned books. "Dutch Schultz' Muzzleloading Accuracy System" is more than worth the cost for someone new to traditional MLs. https://blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/

    Traditions Trapper First Shots

The last thirty-five years or so I’ve been shooting at the range near Cy-Fair, it was closed this year following a shooting accident at the facility. The first time I drove to Carter’s back in February I was astonished at all the ”changes” in that area. Once you get to Carter’s and walking in…...

    Traditions Trapper First Shots

I used Fiebings Dark Brown leather dye followed with three coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil. I used the same dye on the stock and the holster. After completing this build I have wondered if I would have gotten more even coloring by putting one coat of Tru-oil and then the leather dye, followed...
