    Hunting with a revolver

I hunt the Edwards Plateau area of Texas that has no ML season. I hunt with my TC .50 alongside all the guys who shoot unmentionables, and I have a couple of friends who shoot bows all season long. Doesn’t matter that it’s gun season, we hunt with what we enjoy shooting.

    First Shot Throwing Wild?

@N.Y. Yankee I currently hunt with and had the same problem in a TC .50 while using Bore Butter for lube. After changing to a thicker patch and then lastly to TOW Mink Oil, I’m now accurate on the first shot. When applying the Mink Oil to the patch I only apply it to the barrel side of the...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Got a little range time in…..this target is a total of ten shots….five high right, four at the bullseye, one…uh…flinch, jerk, didn’t squeeze…I dunno. All in all, I was happy!

buying muzzleloaders, if you had to do it all over what would you have bought and not bought

Still have my TC Hawken .50 built from a kit in 1984, love it and have hunted and taken a lot of deer with it. To do over, the only change would be to have purchased a .54 instead of the .50.

Why on some days to I shoot two close groups while aiming at the same point??

Last time at the range took a friend to introduce him to BP shooting. When I was shooting my shots were hitting 2” high and a group of about 2” at 50 yards…..my friend gave me a lesson in shooting my own gun….5 shots, 5 bullseyes (about a 1” group) at same yardage. That day I learned how...

    My eyes are going bad!

Try a web sight aperturenmore.com....they claim to have T/C tang peep sights, also try eBay....found a few there as well. I have a T/C tang peep on my Hawken, not authentic but it’s what I need to be able to shoot.

    I'm a rookie who's anxious to learn.

Welcome to the forum and to BP! If I can offer one bit of advice that I learned “after the fact”. When you get your new flintlock remember there are two parts to shooting accurately with a muzzleloader. FIRST AND FOREMOST find your most accurate load! It doesn’t matter where on the target you...

Hogs are no longer scared of muzzleloaders

What’s with the rubber band around the fore stock and barrel? DK

Aiming with one or both eyes

I close the non-dominant eye. Recently tried both eyes open, couldn’t figure out where I was aiming. I see value in keeping both eyes open but not sure at 63 years old I can retrain these eyes. DK

    Sighting in a new rifle

There are two separate processes to get an accurate muzzleloader. First is load development, second is sighting in. You need to determine the most accurate load for your particular gun so that it shoots tight groups. Once that is done THEN and only then should you start adjusting the sights to...

    Sighting in a new rifle

I do the same as @Critter Getter, 1-2” inch high at 50 and limit my shots to 50 yards. I actually use a range finder when hunting. I suggest you get Dutch’s book, start with a powder charge 1.5 times bore size, a ball and patch combination that matches bore size. Start out at 25 yards, develop...

Finally made it back to the range yesterday.. Shot three five shot 50 yard groups using 70 grains 2F Goex, .490 balls that all weigh between 177.0-177.5 grains, .018 denim patch that compressed to .011. First group lubed with Dutch’s 6:1 Ballistol to water, second group lubed with olive oil...

    General Black Powder Shooting Stupidity

Mid-seventies...had shop class 8:00-11:00, teacher would allow two or three of us to skip class to squirrel hunt provided we brought some back for him. Oh, and we could bring our guns into the shop to clean them.

There are a lot of variables at play. Even suppository guns can take a lot of tweaking to get the finest results from @yonderin I have no response for this other than a good chuckle, that’s hilarious!

@Old Hawkeye Thanks for the suggestions, I have already done the different powder charges as you suggest and have settled on 70 grain. I am now in the process of doing your second suggestion of different patch/different lube combinations. Next week when I go out to the range the only...
