    The Challange

Well, here is one for you married shooters. The wife lets loose with the "We don't spend any time together anymore" ("cringe".....anyone heard that one before?). So then she lets out the challange: "OK, if you go to my yoga class, I will go shooting with you! So there, I dare you!" Ok...

    bending barrel tang

Bend cold. Clamp the barrel in a vice > vertical, use the circle end of a adjustable wrench to bend (slip it over the tang and pick a pivot point). Use some sort of indicator of your bend progress (a 1:1 profile of the bend desired - to be held up behind the tang as you bend - is a big help). Mike

My Day at the Range: Part 3

And I thought I had bad days at the range. :rotf: :rotf: Keep these stories comming, it's why we all come to this site!

    Methods to melt scrap lead?

Coot: I use plumbers lead ingots. Five pound round buttons that just fit into my iron lead pot which I sit on my camp stove. I then pour our 1/2 pound ingots (lee ingot mould) for use in my pot. Each button has to be done from a cold pot, cause they just fit. Purchased buttons my be...

New Colt Walker, First Range Day

Scalper: Just as soon as I get to the range - why not... the big thing does not seem to mind the distance, so why should I (except for the bad eyes). Mike

New Colt Walker, First Range Day

Accurate yes, but it does shoot high. Have to aim real low at 25, still low at 50, more or less on at 75 with a 6 o'clock hold. Have not got 100 down yet, just got 2 of 6 on the paper (say 12" round) first time out. I guess someone wanted to keep those Mexican Lancers at a distance in 1847. Mike

Your hc/pc Hawkens and photos, please.

captvobek: Thanks for the compliment. 200 hours tied up in those pictures (but then again, I am a slow builder). To answer the other question - the under rib was not tapered for this rifle - as recommended by Track, even though the barrel goes from 1-1/8" to an 1". Mike F

Fair price for a Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon

I would think, 350 to 400 new, with shipping, for an Italian copy. Used? Depends. Sources to check: Dixie Gun Works Midway Possible Shop Bunch of others Uberti seems to be the standard. Mike F

New Colt Walker, First Range Day

Wow! What a piece of iron. Uberti Colt Walker, came in two weeks ago, just got off travel and went to the range today. Good lord, 50 grains of Goex FFFG, a Wonder Wad, a .454 ball and a cap of Wonder Seals. The thump was tremendious, every pair of eyeballs at the range rotate in your...

    Lipstick on a Pig

Mr. Gray: Thanks, I spent a whole lot more time drawing that durn thing than I did carving it. I agree, that area is a pain to get a nice balanced carving into. If you notice, I chose an asymetrical design - actually easier to do than one that has to balance left to right. Mike F

    Lipstick on a Pig

billk: The mortise's were cut with gouges and those forsner bits (the ones that cut nice circular holes with flat bottoms). But mostly with the same gouges that I carve with. The trick is to drill a series of pilot holes to a standard depth using a regular drill with a depth collar on it -...

    Lipstick on a Pig

Don't mind in the least, be happy to answer any questions you have. Pictures showed a lot of results, but unlike the tutorials on this site, I didn't get into a lot of "how" - it was more like "gee, that worked! :) quick, take a picture". Mike F

    Lipstick on a Pig

New stock, a Track blank with the barrel and ramrod done - was fun doing all the mortise work from scratch.

    Lipstick on a Pig

Well, here is a piece of my past - an Ultra High Kentucky Pistol, assembled from a kit > mostly using sand paper (circa 1972, I think). Well I decided my past needed an upgrade, so I took the barrel (fixed the gap at the breech plug with a brass washer) and the lock (fixed the v-spring so it...

    Track of the Wolf Kits

I started with a Track kit. Most of the tasks are straight forward, so long as you get a good book or books on building kits. Gunsmith of Grenville and American Longrifle are excellent. Get yourself a small drill press. The 100$ or so you spend at Sears, or where ever, will save you a lot of...

    Tang screw

Kentuckywindage: 1. Bolt, measure, TOTW for the next size up, drill out the trigger assembly where the bolt goes through, re-tap. Done it - even re-chamfered the tang entry to get a nice screw slot line up. 2. If the gap is small, take a soft hammer (brass or nylon head) and "excersize" it to...

    inletting trigger?

kbeers: Ditto on the Gunsmith of Greenville, very detailed on trigger and building in general. Also good is the Recreating the American Longrifle. Have both and use both. The Gunsmith is better on the details of inletting, if you want an opinion - more pages for more drawings (I hate...
