Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

I start with the maximum load the manufacturer recommends for the projectile Im shooting. If the accuracy is good, so be it. I only use my guns for hunting, rarly any competition, and recoil is not bad with a roundball. If accuracy is not good, I go down 5 grains at a time and test it. When I...

Curved buttstock placement on the arm/shoulder..........

This is totally unnecessary if shot as intended. You are not doing it right. Ive never found this to be true. Shooting crescent buttstocks for 35 years and shot many heavy loads. I gues I was taught well right from the start.

So I Was Strolling Through A Local Gun Store

Something like that happened to me. I found a nice gun I liked but it was on consignment. The price was high so I made an offer and the guy said no so I asked for the manager, reminded him it had been there a long time, could he contact the consignor and make the offer. He said absolutely not. I...

    Pawnshop Hawken

I agree, nice job with the clean up and a good find for what you paid. The Hawken style gun is my favorite type. T/C and CVA were the big deals back when I was getting started in BP at 16 yrs old 1986. I bought a renegade kit and assembled it. Wish I had gotten a Hawken instead. I have 3 now.

    Cabela's chaps my hide.

I have a Bass Pro about 45 min away, in yet another crappy mall. The closest Cabelas is over 1.5 hours away, so I go to BP. I have to say, they really have a ton of stuff. The fishing department is truly amazing. There hunting isles however, not so much. The last few times I was in, they had...

Patch lube for round ball shooting..........Lawdy.

Dont. Just get a tin, jar, can, whatever, as long as it has a lid.

    Bullet starters?

Someone makes a thing called a "palm saver". A cone shaped piece of wood with a 3/8 hole in the small end ,intended to go over your ramrod to help you fully seat the ball on the powder. I purchased one of those and glued in a 6 inch piece of 3/8 maple dowel. I just put the flat end of the dowel...

    Anti Brush Rhetoric.

You want a good reason? It's a big waste of time and it's not needed to clean a muzzleloader bore. That's the reason. Actually two reasons. And guys get them stuck in the bore because they dont know how to use it. OK, three reasons. Honestly, I tried one, one time and quit and never did that...

    Hunting with a percussion rifle

I always have a capper handy somehow, either on a thong around my neck, tied to my bag strap, or in my fromt jacket pocket. I charge the gun before I go to the woods. If Im traveling to a blind, I have the cap off the nipple, hammer down. the moment I suspect I might be coming in contact with...

    Pawn Shop Blasphemy

Yes, there are ways to fix that. Even if the scope mount holes do go through, I have fixed them with set screws. Find the correct thread and buy them long. File the point end flat and smooth. Put some JB Weld on the threads or red thread locker. Install the screws to what you believe is flush...

    Schuetzen powder?

I agree 100% about the search and old threads. Many times the search is irrelevant or you spend a lot of time reading threads and still dont find your answer. "Search" only works well if you know something is there or you have extra time to sit and read through threads that may or may not mean...

Have you ever shot a "slug" of lead?

Probably wouldnt be much left to salvage.

Making a new ramrod - questions

I think it's pretty funny how so many HC/PC guys have absolutely no problem with using wood for everything from tool handles to tent posts and literally EVERYTHING in between but as soon as someone mentions wooden ramrods, HOLEY COW! WATCH OUT, that thing is going to wear out your muzzle and...

Have you ever shot a "slug" of lead?

Slug , meaning, just a cylinder of lead the propper diameter, the ends cut square and the same length as the diameter? I would assume it would be patched?

    Dumping Ballistol and Gun Oil

I got away from specific, name brand gun care products of all kinds with the thought that what if they suddenly became unavailable, as did happen over the last 2 years and is still happening, or if we were unable to order and ship products from just anywhere at anytime. I've found there are many...

    T/C Hawken Breech Plug Screw/Cleaning

The cleaning instructions/owners manual you got with the gun were for an in-line gun, not a sidelock.

    Exit wound on deer.

One of the reasons lead round ball is so effective is that it flattens out in the animal and dumps all its energy plus creating more damage. This is why we have "mushrooming" soft point rifle bullets. they expand and do more damage. If all animals dropped in thier tracks at the shot, we could...
