Like to identify this Hawken/Plains rifle

These parts are exactly the same as the Cherry Corners kit I got back in 1974. Even down to the extra long hammer for use with a large-breech tapered barrel. I cut & shortened and welded my hammer to fit GR Douglas 1" straight barrel. Has held up perfectly. I've won many prizes with this gun...

Defarbing a TC or the like

Actually, high strength solder is used on English guns mostly. Most all other countries double guns are brazed. Much higher strength than any solder.

    What was my mistake?

Obviously a "dry load" aka no powder.

can i please see your cherry stocks finished with oven cleaner,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Using liquid base such as Easy Off is a rather brutal approach and likely gives low penetration into the wood. Furniture makers use ammonia in a closed environment. Vapors penetrate w/o raising grain. Takes some time, hours to a day or so, so is easy to control with observation. Oil rubbing...

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

When I was young I tried many things that "everyone" knew were foolish. Even fired my 40mm cannon using 4fg! worked fine. Burns faster & develops max pressure "spike" a bit sooner. That's about it.

    Gun-maker's Vise

I have a vise like this & find it great to use with gunstocks.

    Ffg vs fffg

Your question is unanswerable quickle. Grains is a unit of mass/weight equivalent to the mean/average weight of a single grain (seed) of barley. If you're shooting 70 gns (weight) of P-dex, you're overloading by a lot. 70 gns setting on a BP measure gives a much lighter charge of P-dex, with...

    Pecatonica River Longrifles

I've had nothing but smiles and grins in. my dealings with Pecatonice, even with my sometimes finicky special requests. BUT it has been some years ago and times have gotten really wierd. Hope you & they will get friendly soon.

packing a Flintlock rifle for shipping

Assuming a longrifle here: Absolutely DO NOT remove barrel from stock! You create a long fragile piece rattling around with a heavy stiff piece! The barrel in place reinforces the stock against breakage. TOTW used to ship in triple weight boxes with plastic film over the gun and space between...

Defarbing a TC or the like

One can TIG weld using appropriate steel rod, then draw file to avoid leaving a wavy non-flat flat.

Reamer Made to Correct a Cannon Bore

WOW! With that sort of accuracy and precision and material selection, you can have bare minimum windage, i.e. closest fit of ball to bore to get max velocity and accuracy/precision in shooting. A winning combination! Good on ya! I look forward to seeing some shooting results.

Reamer Made to Correct a Cannon Bore

Really admire the bore! What's the dark liner in the mould? You'll get variation in ball diameter, so 0.005 should be OK. If you can engineer a way to improve sphericity, you could even go closer. I was out shot by an original riverboat smooth-bore cannon that was bored quite precisely and the...

Reamer Made to Correct a Cannon Bore

I'd look at engine cylinder reamers & spring loaded hones.

T/c Hawken with 1/66 round ball barrel loads

1/66 is not a normal TC twist. If it has 1/66 twist, you can use just about any powder charge in it. 100 grns GOEX is great for deer hunting. 60 for targets at up to 50 yds.

I use 100% cotton diaper flannel. Cut it on paper cutter. Quick work for lots of patches

Reamer Made to Correct a Cannon Bore

So you need to remove 0.010 in diameter...gonna be major work to do so with the nice reamer pictured. Lots of horsepower required! And you will need some guide. or did you say your bore has two diameters? Is the larger bore at the front? How far back to the step? i.e. how much length of the...

    Is my bore ruined?

    Not at all true.
