    Rifles with common loads

I shoot 70gr 2f or 3f in my .54 and same for my 20ga trade gun and my 12ga double barrel. Other than that, not so much....too much flame and smoke from 70gr in the .50 pistol.....Just sayin!

    Cap and Ball Revolver load

Hi, I used 2 felt "wonder wads" over 25 gr 3F in mine. But I was only ever plinking. I have not tried other methods. I had an old timer say he put corn meal over his powder and topped up the cylinder with it. Then seated the balls and compressed the meal and powder. He said this was quick...

    Hello new from Oregon

Howdy. Over on your side of Portland you may want to check out Barlow Trail Long Rifles. They are a good group. Further south, I belong to the Forest Hills Blsck Powder Brigade. Both have members with many years experience and always looking to help folks that are interested.

    School Me on Tradeguns

Merry Christmas Smokey, I bought a NW Trade Gun a few years ago. It is a North Star brand. My understanding is that it is a replica of what was traided to the natives for furs etc. In the Pacific northwest. I am sure there are folks who know how to compare against a European fouler better than...

    Lyman GPR...or not?

The rifle in my avatar is my Lyman GP. Prior to that gun I had some really bad rifles. First was a Pennsylvania flinter CVA - 1976 Bi Centennial version - bought brand new - Pure POS. Then I inherited a rusted out Thompson knockoff sold by Sears. Beautiful gun - could not hit a pie plate at...

Removing flesh/meat from a deer skull.

Last one we did, I tied it to a small maple higher than the dogs could reach and came back in the spring and the bugs, birds a such had picked it clean over the winter. Bone white and perfect.

    1861 Bridesberg Resurrection

Very cool. I found a rust removal method that is very useful if you have time to let it work. I found this from some automotive sites and have tried it with amazing results. A 9:1 water to molasses mix. Parts submerged in this mix will come out with all rust completely removed. The mix...

    weighting in on volume

This seems to be a old old thread. I was reading from the beginning and back in '08 there was a reference: Some members of the Long Range Muzzle Loader discussion list undertook some basic testing in 2001 to assess the Effects of Temperature, Humidity, and Barometric Pressure on Moisture...

    Swaged vs molded

Hi All, I have been watching this post for a couple of days. Great dialog. I wanted to add my 2 cents. I shoot targets mostly and from a bag on trail walks. I am looking for accuracy over concern about the hunting performance. With that in mind I like having no sprue, as it is a tad bit...

    Recommended first flintlock?

I second the Kibler statement. I am building one now. For me it is taking much longer than a weekend. I am going slow but loving the build. I am thinking it will be a top shelf gun when i am done. Not because i am doing it. Great quality kit. I am trying not to screw it up....

What is the oddest lead item you've made ammunition from?

I got a bunch of the backs of the films from dental xrays. The dentist had to pay someone to haul off the hazardest waste, so was happy to give it away. Thin foil though.....takes fifty twenty billion crap loads of them to fill the pot. Kind of like cooking spinich. Takes a bunch to melt into a...

SOLD T/C .45 Cherokee, mint, new unfired for sale!

If you are not familiar with this model, it is outstanding. I bought one years ago for my wife and have started her, three sons and a grandson shooting on it. If I could figure out why I need a second one, I would be buying it! They are beautiful and ours is a great shooter.

    Touch Hole too high... help!

Along the line of the jb weld idea. I might try raising the bottom of the pan. Maybe soft solder a shim in there and look for a performance change. If so you could replace it with a silver solderd shim. If it didnt work go for the replacement touch hole. Be warned though. Get a good gunsmith if...
