How long would you go when using spit patches without concern?

I often use spit (saliva) on my patches when target shooting or just having fun but always shoot them straight away. If I'm hunting then it's always a lubed patch - usually with ox-yoke. Never had any issues with rust

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

Haven't smoked a pipe in a while; still have quite a few; will probably go back to them one day; My favourites are bent stem Peterson's and Borkum Riff Black Cavendish. Watching the sun go down over a NZ Mountain Lake with a pipe in one hand and a good single malt in the other is pretty close to...

Whats your favorite muzzleloader you own?

No contest my 40cal Bedford built by Rudyard for me - even if he did put both our names on the barrel - Douglas Premium barrel/ L&R Percussion lock and a corker piece of Maple from Pecatonica. It's just lovely and shoots as good as it looks; mind you at my age now I shoot the same groups from...

    Won A Hawkin!

Not won but I have been fortunate enough to be gifted a number of guns over the years; A 50 Cal Fullstock Hawken (actually built by myself and Rudyard); a delightful little 40 Cal Ohio (thanks Rudyard), a 92 Winchester in 38.40 and lately a Single barrel M/L percussion shotgun by Colley. Raffles...

SOLD CVA Mountain Rifle in .45

Those USA made CVA's are tack drivers - I've had experience of a few - including the 2 piece stock 'Kentucky' all have shot really well. We did encounter a 50 cal Mountain Rifle where the bore must have been 'bent' inside the barrel - shot way off to one side - being in NZ there was no chance to...

    Considering a .40 caliber

Agree with the comments I have 2 40's - the Bedford that Rudyard mentioned (Douglas Premium Barrel) and a Flint Bucks County with a Getz barrel - both are superb shooters - my usual load is 60gr Goex FFFg (or NZ Holy Smoke) and a 395 ball cast or swaged with pillow ticking - Ox Yoke or spit...

    Matchlock x accuracy

I was on the Jury at Pforzheim in 1989 and inspected the target when a Japanese competitor posted a 100 - from memory 2 of the 3 other shots were also 10's - that's on the French 200m target - still very impressive. And that's still smoothbores; my own 16th Century Dutch style Matchlock by...

    1800s percussion rifle identification

I agree looks Indian to me - still a nice piece tho'

1860 Hollis and Sheath percussion rifle by John Campbell

Hideous is in the eye of the beholder - clearly someone has taken an old M/L Shogun (rather nice) and sleeved a rifle barrel into it (obvious in the muzzle pic) -with a Lyman front tunnel and a Redfield rear aperture. If it shoots I could certainly live with 'hideous'- sorry Rudyard I was...

Round Ball performance story and question

The first Red Deer (a big Hind) I harvested with a Muzzleloader was with my second rifle; range about 50 yards- a Numrich Barreled Half stock - 90gr of FFg and a patched .440 ball the ball entered mid chest, penetrated through to the off- side the ball lodging just under the skin; she ran about...

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

My friend's Steam passion much worse than mine - he has a 2-1/2" Gauge Loco he built whilst still at school - also he's been building a 5" Shay for a long time: I've acquired over the years; an incomplete LBSC Tich; ; A Sentinel and the wreck of a 3-1/2" Jubilee - all projects for when I can...

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

Confusing guys? I live in New Zealand but I used Bucks Co as my name because I had not long acquired a very nice Flint Bucks County - Rudyard was a little peeved I didn't use Bedford; as a Bedford largely built by him is my go- to rifle most of the time. The Hawken Classic is on my Bucket list.

    12L14 Steel good enough?

It's far too easy to blame something other than yourself when you have an 'incident' - I agree with Rudyard; I've plenty of experience with Douglas and Orion Barrels both reportedly 12L14 and never a problem. 12L14 may not be 'ideal' from a metallurgy point of view but can it be determined that...

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

I met my life long friend at high school; we share an interest in Hunting Shooting (and Steam Power) Dave introduced me to another soon to be very close friend who had a 45 Kentucky(Numrich Barrel - Robbins Lock - NZ Rama-Rama wood stock) to my 17 year old eyes(I'm now 72) it was absolutely...

    Japanese Tanegashima Matchlock Arquebus

Lovely example - first saw these being shot at the World Champs in Madrid - ignition speed quite impressive. Just had to have a 'Matchie' - couldn't quite get on with the 'cheek' stock so had Rudyard (when he was staying with me) build a Dutch style snapping Matchlock - used a piece of recycled...

    Hawkens East?

You'd be surprized what shows up on NZ - I've seen a J J Henry (missed out on getting it myself - dammit); A Derringer Rifle; I briefly had a couple of Springfields; I have a rifle almost certainly by Levi Smith Sandusky County Ohio and another could be by Stilgenbauer. All sorts of 'exotica'...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Had a great day - went over to Marlborough and shot the 'Ted Maher Memorial Trophy' - any Black Powder Rifle;10 Shots rested at 50M on the UIT target: I shot the Bedford 40cal and finished up first equal with Bruce C. shooting a Sharps 45.70 with apertures! I matched him shot for shot in the...

Mold size question for .40 cal

I'm running .395 Hornady balls through my Douglas 40 Cal or I use cast .395's from a Green Mountain Mould (wish they still made them) if anything the cast balls are more accurate than swaged. Won the Marlborough Round Ball Trophy last year with cast balls. I agree with previous post very tight...
