How is this Schuetzen FFFg Powder?

You're probably correct @longcruise. Elephant brand disappeared in Vermont and Schuetzen showed up. Muzzleloaders at the annual Winter Biathlon in VT said it was Elephant powder with a new name back in about 2004/2005 and since I was fairly new at flintlocks I presumed they knew. The part...

How is this Schuetzen FFFg Powder?

If I recall correctly that was originally branded "Elephant Powder". Elephant Powder worked fine, but was the dirtiest powder out there, meaning it would foul your Muzzleloader far more than any other brand. At a winter Biathlon in Vermont in 2003, there were two cans of Elephant powder on the...

Does one need to apply oil or ballistol INSIDE the lock?

I always clean and oil my lock on any day that I shoot my rifle(s). I typically remove the lock first and set it aside. Then I plug the vent with a toothpick or a twig and pour a couple of inches of MAP (equal parts mix of Murpy's Oil Soap, Isopropyl [rubbing] Alcohol, and Hydrogen Peroxide)...

Flint gets stuck on hammer face.

So....how many shots do you get out of a flint before you have to knap it? One? two? Sounds to me like you have the angle of your flint striking your frizzen set wrong and instead of slicing along the face, it's hitting the frizzen head on. Your flint is not supposed to hit at the top of the...

I forgot to pack the roundballs - but the substitute worked

Hey do you remember those root-beer barrel penny candies? They'd have a little more mass to them...

I forgot to pack the roundballs - but the substitute worked

"REAL" jawbreakers aren't hollow and don't have gum in them. ;) I remember getting the "normal size" hard jawbreakers out of the penny machines but the solid large ones were a nickel and you couldn't bite through them until they were about half the size of a small jawbreaker! Remembering how...

Newbie Looking for Advice on Failed Ignition of Main Charge

I have an air compressor at home that I used for working on cars for years. One of the tools is an end that has a cone shaped rubber tip. I put that tip in the touch hole and pull the trigger on the tool to shoot a quick burst of compressed air anywhere between about 80 and 100psi down the...

Best way to unload after an unsuccessful hunt?

Those CO2 gadgets work well and I do keep one hidden in my shooting box. However, if I'm coming home, I just dump the powder out of the pan; close the pan; and put the hammer stall in place to keep any accidental or stray sparks from coming off the frizzen and finding their way into the vent...

    What is this musketty thing?

Need a muzzle picture so we can see the rifling referred to.

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

You will definitely have a barrel that develops a patina, but that is far from the browned barrels that became popular in the early 1800's. The Brown Bess (Land Pattern Musket) was never brown, except for those used by Roger's Rangers in the F&I War. The Brits actually polished the barrels of...

    TRU-OIL problem

BEWARE!! Mineral Oil and Mineral Spirits are totally different liquids. If you mix mineral oil in with it, I doubt it will ever dry. Mineral Spirits acts more like turpentine in that it cuts thicker compounds and dries quickly Never leave the lid of a can or bottle of mineral spirits...

    Vent hole location?

It could very well be. That is definitely not an ideal location. Ideally you'd like it even with the middle of the pan and also raised up a little bit so the flash hole is even with the top of the pan or slightly above it. As-is, I would expect that I needed to be careful not to overfill the...

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

Both are fun and I have both, but a flintlock is more fun and makes more smoke! Also percussion caps have been hard to find since Covid and when you do find them in the right size, prices have gone through the roof. Flints are not only much less expensive, but if you get your flintlock set up...

    Thoughts on traditions rocklocks

When I was using one for a few years I found that buying the 5/8 x 5/8 square flints were far easier both to use....and to lose - don't drop it! The ones that were 5/8"-wide x 3/4"-long often would not really fit, but those little square suckers would.

    Patch Lube Latest and Greatest

Yeah that's the best if you can get it. Foster some friendships with Bear hunters and then get a big pot and burner you can use outside and only use it for rendering bear fat. Had a friend in Vermont who did that with a bear he harvested. Used the bear grease (white stuff) for patch lube and...

    Patch Lube Latest and Greatest

Yup @flatcreek, you're correct. I thought it said ethylene glycol and when I saw it was anti-freeze didn't look any closer. Evidently it's not as toxic as Ethylene Glycol and is often found in "Pet Safe Anti-freeze" but it is still toxic to pets. Just googled it and found the following from...

    Patch Lube Latest and Greatest

After 20-years of use, Stumpy's Moose Snot by forum member @Stumpkiller is the best I've used. Doesn't freeze, doesn't run, as long as I can feel it with my finger on the opposite side of the patch that's being rubbed in its "wax shoe-polish" consistency, I never have to do a cleaning wipe...

    Patch Lube Latest and Greatest

Just an FYI if you have pets. Make sure you don't spill that anywhere where it can puddle slightly. It tastes like candy to dogs and cats and will kill them dead in short order.
