    Small pawnshop find

I had an experience with an AR15 I bought from a LGS with whom I've done business for decades. They bought a collection of (stolen) guns from someone and local law enforcement was on the trail. I got a call from the store manager asking if I still had the rifle. So, the deal was they would...

    Temperature only.

BP is remarkably stable. Powder from over 100 years ago still goes bang.

WANTED North Star ,NW trade gun

I have a North Star (parts...built by them? Don't know..) fowler w/ 41" barrel in 20ga. Barrel profile and lock looks identical to those shown. Chop off the butt plate, nail on an iron plate, swap out the trigger guard and there ya have it, trade gun. Yeah, shows what I know about the genre...

Fusil de chasse a cheek slapper?

I find that for me, any stock shape that has the classical "roman nose" comb profile, will smack me right under the cheek bone and is decidedly unpleasant to shoot. I sold a Pedersoli Kentucky for that reason. Straight combed stocks and higher profile sights just work better for me so I shape...

What are your thoughts on this barrel/breach fitment?

Hooked breech not lining up right. The actual hooked breech plug might have been pulled and not put back in to proper clocked alignment. A cleanup, lube and wrenched back in correctly should line it right up.

    1861 Springfield

As derived from your use of the past tense, I assume these molds are no longer made? I'd love a lighter bullet for my rifle muskets. I see no point (other than for historical accuracy) in slinging 500 grains of lead downrange just to make holes or clang steel. The less-is-more approach for...

    The Romance of Flintlocks

It is pure alchemy: Wood, iron, brass, lead and minerals from the earth, crafted by human hands into something amazingly beautiful to behold in both form and function. Nothing else comes close.

    Maple finish

Straight AF can really darken the wood, especially the open grained areas on a standard grade stock. So, dauber it on, allow to dry, heat blush then sand or scotchbrite back spending extra time on the above mentioned areas or they'll get really dark when oiled. I like LMF cherry stain added to...

^ times 1000. Flatter butt plates are easier but they still will test your resolve.

Go .44, more power, bigger holes. For same overall form factor you just get better performance. I'm not a fan of brass frames. Brass is for furniture and fittings, not firearm receivers.

    Some real old prices

The dollar had a helluva lot more purchasing power back then. I remember saving every penny for an EMF 2nd Model Dragoon kit around 1982. I had almost no tools to finish it, just rasped and sanded the grip panels a little, filed off some rough spots and went shooting. Magical experience for a...
