    Sharpie

I've always used a paint brush to apply the Jerrows Inletting black. The kind sold at hobby shops and hardware stores for painting model cars and airplanes. It only takes a "touch" of black on the tip of the brush to get enough of it and the brush easily spreads it out into a very even, thin...

1-60 twist .465 bore 32" barrel - Best Hunting Ammo?

Bullets work best if the diameter of them is about .002 to .003 smaller than the bore so IMO, the .458 bullet might work if it was made from pure lead but I wouldn't bet on it. You didn't say anything about the rifling and that also has a lot to do with how well a slug will shoot in the gun...

    Identity Help? Indian made?

I'm missing something here. I don't see any pictures or a link to any pictures. It's hard to say what it is without looking at it.

.31 caliber balls for buckshot load?

It might be a good idea to check with the Game & Fish department before venturing off into the woods to hunt deer. I don't think buckshot is allowed in Arizona. Also remember, if you shoot a buck & ball load, the velocity of all of the balls will be considerably less than it would be if only a...

    Civil war lorenz

Call me a party pooper or a stick in the mud but if I owned that gun I would reduce the powder load to 55 or 60 grains max. A 60 grain powder load was very common during for rifled muskets during the War Between the States and it has more than enough power to do any job you might want to do.

    Sharpie

Excellent suggestion. I see that Target has them @ $4.50 for 4 of the pens. One of the most important things about in-letting black or whatever is used is that it stays soft so it can be transferred to anything that touches it. Because Sharpie pens are made to almost dry immediately I doubt...

    Eli Whitney

The must have modified the tooling some though. Notice in my pictures above, the brass framed Spiller & Burr has considerably more material where the barrel screws into the frame. From Flayderman's Guide, I learned that the Second model reduced this material from approx. 7/8" to 5/8" creating a...

These are my Whitney and my Spiller & Burr. I'd like to show more but they were stolen out of my house about 6 years ago.

Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier

I'm sure, occasionally locks were used to start a fire but I don't think it was a common thing to do. First off, I believe most muzzleloading guns in areas outside the towns at the time were kept loaded. Even if the priming powder was replaced with some fire starting material there is an...

    Lock identification

I moved this thread here because it was originally posted in the Firearms Identification section. That section is for discussing old original guns, not for newly made gun parts like this. Before you post a reply to the thread remember, be nice. Belittling the builder or snide comments about...

    Kibler SMR Build

One of the things I've learned over the years is, you never know how a curly maple gunstock will turn out until you've finished it. Each piece of maple will take the stains or aqua-fortis differently than a seemingly similar piece of maple. I once saw a unfinished curly maple stock that had the...

    Barrel Ringing

We don't talk about smokeless powder on the forum unless it is to warn people to NEVER use it in a muzzleloader or cap & ball pistol.

    Patchbox

I think brass wood screws for use on firearms didn't become popular until the late 1960's when muzzleloading rifle kits were first offered. All of the old original guns that haven't had a screw replaced recently have steel screws holding their patch boxes and escutcheons in place.

    The Trooper

Can't say I enjoyed the music video. If anyone wants to hear a much better version of the "Charge of the Light Brigade", follow the link below and choose, "Charge of the Light Brigade". It was sung by the 3D's, a folk song group back in the 1960's. While your there, also select "Gunga Din"...

Lymans GPR in action shooting GLASS...

It's off topic but, after you first post something on the forum you have 15 minutes to "edit" it. Editing it allows you to change what was said but I don't think it allows you to delete the post. In that case, just change whatever was said to "Please Delete". I will see it and remove it...

Book recommendations to identify flintlock pistols

The book, "Pistols of the World" by Claude Blair, © 1968, gives a good coverage of Wheel-lock, Snaphance, Percussion and modern guns we don't talk about. Most of the book deals with the types of guns we do discuss. In the back of the book there are drawings of various lock types including...

Can or should you paper patch a Lee REAL bullet?

My answer to paper patching a REAL bullet is, no, you cannot paper patch them. Well.... read on to see my reasoning. REAL bullets are oversize with the lands meant to be cut away or engraved by the rifling as they are forced into the bore. Doing this if a paper patch is wrapped around the...

    Storing led round balls

Coat them with some kind of oil and keep them or shoot them. The oil will keep the powdery lead oxide from becoming airborne so the only thing that it will contaminate is your fingers when you handle the balls/bullets. Then remember to wash your hands before handling any food or smoking...
