White Lightnin' touch hole liner, barrel rust

The liner should be snug. I use a baby pipe wrench it’s like 6 inches or less long. My guess only developed 5 foot pounds of torque. Only used my finger tips on the wrench. I don’t fuss at all about the exterior of the barrel during construction. You going to draw file polish, or blue, or brown...

    Weld filler rod suggestions

Your best bet would be steel, after shaping the welded tip case hardening would be necessary

Throwing Knife Steel type and thickness

1/8” to 3/16 mild steel will do fine for your first couple attempts. Easy to shape and cheap. You won’t make just one. Surprisingly it holds up decently in use and may be all you need. I made a couple in different lengths trying to find something that threw similar to my hawk. I still found...

.58 Colonial is a heart breaker

That’s ok Mike every year or two I’ll mooch a bite of liver off a family member, just to be sure I still find it totally repulsive. It still is. BJH

Hard, brittle, and fast PRB for more damage?

As long as you stick to broad side heart lung area shots with the aim point in the center of the deers vitals, with your .58 you will normally find your deer within sight. I’ve never had one travel out of sight useing my .58 cal rifle using 80 gr ffg with either wheelweight alloy balls or pure...

.58 Colonial is a heart breaker

That’s why I aim for the center of the heart-lung “ football”. Usually taking out the aorta and both lungs. I like my pickled deer heart. I also hunt with a .58 cal flintlock rifle. Usually they go down in sight. BJH

    Punch size for 16ga?

11/16 arch punch has worked well for me

    Buck vs Doe

I’ll gladly harvest the first legal deer I see and have a tag for. With the exception that I try to not shoot lone antler less deer. They’re too likely to be button bucks or spikes. I am usually a 1 and done hunter. As my son and I are the only ones that eat venison. BJH

Soldering barrel lugs and sight, success!

Nice job. I normally use modern plumbing solder 95/5 tin silver solder. Any hardware store has it, and paste solder flux. Same stuff as used for plumbing. All surfaces must be freshly filed and not be fingerprinted. Simply flux and clamp, heat slowly from the opposite side until the solder...

    Cleaning Kibler Woodsrunner?

Since I normally use Simple Green detergent for patch lube. Then it’s a no brainer to use it to clean the bore also. Push a toothpick into the touch hole, and pour some tepid water into the bore, slosh back and forth. Then dump it out. Remove tooth pic, then dry patch the bore till clean and...

    Possible gunpowder related tragedy

It good to hear of his improvement. Having just had a run in with large burns, absolutely wound care hurts!!!!!! There’s nothing like it I’ve ever experienced. Not to mention the pain from the burns themselves. Plus the general reticence of the doctors to prescribe adequate pain medication. May...

    How often to disassemble lock?

Somewhere between seldom and never. Usually when I build a rifle the lock is disassembled and reassembled a couple of times. I usually do any tuning and debugging in the process. When in service my lock cleaning steps mimic Dave Person’s. BJH

Paints for camp fixtures and furniture?

I painted my tent poles an camp boxes with red latex barn paint. Resulting in a flat red finish, at least in theory to help me find my way home at rondyvous. BJH

What caliber and style for you?

First of all I recommend .54 or .58 cal. Your Dickert idea would work. Use a Chambers lock. BJH

Woodsrunner Matchbox Lid too tight now

Having done a few of these beware of doing too much work on the patch box cavity. I’d rather focus on making clearance on the lid. The surfaces you will be dressing will be hidden when finished. Heaven forbid Kibler makes lids every day. If you goof. If anything Kibler holds their tolerances...

PRB thru a mod choke ???

The ball If loaded on top of a fiber wad without the patch and with jute or flax fiber or top to hold the ball in place. I’d think it would be ok providing the fiber securely hold the ball in place. I wouldn’t expect much for accuracy, then again? BJH

Be certain the sear arm tip is not contacting the bottom of the lock mortise or the hole first.

Who's Going to the Gunmaker's Fair?

I got there for two of the three days I planned. I had a accident and burned both of my lower legs first and second degrees Wednesday. Saturday I presented my seminar on the sliding wood patch box, and had to head home early due to swelling of my legs. I enjoyed talking with lots of people...
