    flintlocks in the rain

was the old timers who wouldnt take their flinters outa the cars due to rain. think i onley saw a single other flinter while i was there but it was a pistol. looked like a heavy dragoon (horse pistol). i wasnt there to compete i just wanted to hang around with other traditional...

    Howdah Hunter

its generally accepted that the 20g smoothbore howdah is the best outa the howdah series. it will shoot groups about the same as the rifled versions with a ball and it can shoot shot loads. its a great small critter and snake gun. if it wasnt so expensive id own a 20g howdah. if they made the...

    Howdah Hunter

this is very true, dont underestimate 25 grains of 3F powder! i load my 44 cal revolver with 25 grains of 3F BP and 4" of solid pine will not stop the ball at 25 yards (looks like the hole was drilled). -matt

    flintlocks in the rain

went to a woods walk today and the weather was typical WA weather, this means it rained the entire time. something i noticed was no one was shooten flint cause of the rain (except me). why are people so paranoid about rain? i simply kept my lock covered with an old shirt inbetween shots onley...

Help! I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place!

if your looking for a fun challenge i would highly recomend a fowling piece. no one questions the skill of a hunter who uses one of these guns for big game. a 62 cal flintlock fowler is good for game ranging from squirrels, pheasants, turkey, hog, deer, moose, and bears (pretty much anything shy...

69 cal rifled musket barrel diameter

i can onley tell at the muzzle where its got a bare spot. from what i can tell of the rifling its very sporatic with some spots being shallow while others are deeper. the barrel was just bored very poorly with either dull or out of spec tooling. im sending mr. hoyt a letter via snail mail as...

    Lesson learned... cheap powder horns

i have one of these and love it! its a great little day horn if your not using heavy powder loads (over 70 grains). http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/76/1/HORN-A-M i dont have one of these but if its anything like the above horn then its probably nice...

69 cal rifled musket barrel diameter

its been too long since i bought it and ive shot it so i really doubt they would take it back. i didnt realise just how bad the barrel was till it was really too late. now i simply warn people against armi-sport firearms. -matt

    another .75 gonne

i would use FF or even FFF powder and probably 30-50 grains but no more. the barrel is really too short to be getting much outa larger charges.

69 cal rifled musket barrel diameter

goodcheer i tried to have a 69 cal mini mold sized up to fit the gun. it didnt end up working very well. the gun shot 12-16" to the left and the groups were around 8-10" wide. the rifling in the gun ranges .003 to smooth bore depending on where in the barrel your looking. sizing the bore to the...

    Pedersoli or Lyman

depends on what you want, full stock or half stock and what style. i think both Lyman and Pedersoli locks are about equal when it comes to quality. the Lyman GPR is one of the most popular starter production flintlocks out there. its also cheaper then the Pedersoli equivolent. -matt

69 cal rifled musket barrel diameter

ive got an armi sport 69 cal rifled musket thats currently a paper weight as it cant hit the broad side of a barn from inside of it. the bore is something like .694 and the rifling is almost nonexistant. so i figured id try and contact Mr. Hoyt and see if he can put a rifled liner in to make...

a day at the range with my Jaeger

how are your 50 yard shots compared to your 100 yard shots with that light load? -matt

a day at the range with my Jaeger

i think the 80 grain load of 2F is pretty solid but an even thicker patch might be a good idea. now a 70 grain load of 3F might also work pretty well. i need to hit the fabric store again and see what i can find. i am worried that these lighter loads wont be able to reach out to 100 yards...

    Howdah Hunter

if you can prove that unburnt powder is coming out of your gun when fired then you would be settling an age old debate on this forum. -matt

    Square or round?

round bottom rifled barrels tend to be easier to clean and easier to load. my 58 cal Jaeger barrel has round bottom rifling and i love it. -matt

    military heritage guns...

i would recomend Veteran arms, i have spoken with the owner on several occasions (via email) and he runs an honest outfit. in fact i intend to buy a matchlock from him as soon as he gets them back in stock. ive also heard good things about flintlockrepair.com but i havent dealt with them...

a day at the range with my Jaeger

so i spent another afternoon at my favorit place, the gun range! as usual i probably fired about 40+ shots and let at least a half dozen other people at the range shoot my gun (im always trying to recruit for our hobby). the other muzzleloading shooter at the range couldnt figure out why his...
