What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Shot a couple of aluminum cans with the Yellow Bird Gun, then went off on an adventure. Toni wanted to go to the "female finery" shop to get her hair cut and dyed... among other things. Spent most of the time she was there at Kwik Trip ingesting stuff I'm not supposed to eat, then went to pick...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

An old (80) smith showed me how to make those once when I helped fill in at a smithing exhibition. My own wall hooks have a circle base that hangs on a nail, but the ones you made are actually more practical and can't easily get knocked off the wall like mine can. The thing I showed him was an...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Took the T/C Renegade .50 caliber flintlock down and did a bit of shooting in the back yard. That old toaster is about 50% holes now... time to recycle it more conventionally I guess. Got my order from AG Russel today which contained my new "Woodswalker" and my "Skipper". Did a little...

    Rädschloss (Wheellock) eye candy!

Beautiful gun, but I got a German-born woman in the house and we got nothing to do today but argue: Is it Rädschloss oder Radschloss (mit nicht umlaut)?

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I gotta ask: what kind of condition was it in after a few years in the woods?

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Shot my old toaster a few more times just to make sure it was properly finished off. Then on to other projects... On another thread, @Tanglefoot pointed out to me that carrying a large belt knife on the front strap of my possibles bag was maybe a Bad Idea as it presented a potential safety...

    Suggested loads with 777

I generally make no reduction in my loads with 777. It is close enough to black powder as to make little difference for the kind of shooting I do with it. That said, I never really approach maximum loads. Your mileage may vary.

What to do with left over scraps of wood

I've heard that it has silicon inclusions... as in the sand it typically grows in. Either way, it is ruinous to saw blades and other tools. I've often thought about making a stock from it, but I fear that I will not live long enough to complete that sort of project. Maybe in the afterlife?

Do not buy an 1862 Police from Midway

No merchant I ever dealt with will warranty new guns. The warranty is by the manufacturer. Biggest problem here is that the Italians kind of hold a monopoly on C&B guns. Midway can either stock them or just get out of that market. Taylor's, I think, do a better job of it and will actually...

What to do with left over scraps of wood

I knew a woodstore mechant who took scraps, priced them lower than the normal board-food price and sold them for carving stock. Learned from him that purple heart makes a pretty difficult piece to carve and it is murder on chisels and knives... not to mention even carbide saw blades.

    load

I generally shoot 50 grains of 3f black powder in my .45, which is admittedly a light load for hunting, but it is accurate enough and kills milk jugs just fine. you can probably take it up to 70 grains with no real issues, but you probably want to consult the manufacturer's manual and load...

    Old family horn

No idea how old it is, BUT, if you can get a GOOD photograph showing the end-grain of the wood, you might have a methodology available. You could contrive to use "dendrochronology", which is basically counting the rings on a tree stump. Each ring in the tree counts one growing season... or...

Why would a ML rifle have a high POI?

Some guns shoot higher with a smaller powder charge, try to increase the charge weight and see what happens. I have a few guns like that.

    Frizzen advice needed

If it works, don't try to fix it. If it doesn't spark, then you may need to do something with it. I agree, it looks more like a lock geometry issue than a metallurgical problem. I would try to replace the part rather than try to case-harden it or something. You might find a replacement that...

Put the old toaster out of it's misery. Watch to the end if you actually want to hear me sing. ;)

    Rice barrel

Kinda new to custom barrels.... actually more or less a virgin on the subject. Is is possible/feasible to order a Rice (or other) custom barrel, install a T/C Hawken breach plug and fit it to a T/C lock and stock? Got a .45 barrel with a ring in it and am considering options. Probably a...

Is this an authentic 1860 Colt?

True dat. If, however, it were a real Colt, it would be, well, too good to be true.

    Eye-Glass Case

I know that maybe an eye-glass case is a bit of a stretch for a muzzle-loading accessory, but it has sorta become essential for myself at least. I discovered this on Amazon a while back and have been using it for a few weeks to keep my reading/shooting glasses relatively safe and clean in the...
