Two vent holes?? Whats up here?

Intriguing, and I don't think it's exactly a new idea. Carefully made too...I greatly magnified the image to find the holes are each externally coned AND they are directionally angled towards fore and aft, seemingly to ignite both front and rear of the powder charge simultaneously. Would like to...

    28 gauge wad in a .54 smoothie

For what it's worth: it's been a long time since I used plastic shotcups, but I experimented and found the Federal brand were just a bit smaller and fit the bore; whereas the Winch. and Rem. brands would not quite fit.

    India Torador Matchlock Wall Gun

I also wondered about X-Raying it...but with the additional step of filling the breech/bore with very fine birdshot to clarify the cavity in the xray photos.

Thank you for the clarification. Sounds like a Ferrocerium Rod, am I close?

I'm a little unsure exactly what constitutes these fire sticks, could you please clarify to help this old codger's understanding?

    Tusco-Emilian Matchlock build

Sounds like a very workable plan! If you are buying from T-C Arms, they seem to have a high opinion of their barrels $$ worth, so you might consider an alternative barrel source to stay in budget (Ebay or ??). FWIW: Instead of subjecting the breech area to the high heat of welding, I would...

    Stuck

I have had the same problems...finally found some 20 GA bore mops with an adaptor for the rod, and problem was solved. PS - it's not HC but then the brass jags aren't either. At the range I have a brieffcase full of cleaning stuff but in the field carry a vial of wet cleaner and extra dry mops...

Pin or peg rest for trigger finger.

Yessir it does make sense. I once was privileged to shoot a friends M/L heavy target rifle with a Very light trigger pull around 4 ounces...what made it unique was the tapered needle protuberance on the front of the trigger. It dug into your finger as you began to squeeze and the pain was...

Military Heritage matchlocks.. How do they rate?

Yeppers...however, aside from custom builders, who else sells completed matchlocks aside from the resellers for Indian manufacturers?

Breech chamber question in a flintlock Fowler

A breech that's wider-than-bore sounds like a bit of a forcing cone design. If you can keep it clean, might be worthwhile to keep it to experiment with. You could always ream or lap to the larger diameter.

    Matchlock pan & cover

I failed to notice that your barrel was previously threaded for a drum. In that case, it might be possible to make up a pan assembly that could simply thread into the existing threaded location FWIW.

    Matchlock pan & cover

The pan itself could be dovetailed into the barrel, or soft-soldered in place if preferred. Soft-soldering b/c I don't like high heat applied to the breech section of a barrel where it could weaken the metal. Pans attached to a lockplate came about much later. The early pan covers were often...

    Treatise on shooting a Petronel

Thanks for your response. Using the photos I couldn't discern much of the grain with old eyes. Interesting that they went to a vertical spliced joint solution in your example. I've toyed with the idea of doing a steam bent stock but lack the experience in that endeavor...at my age it appears...

    Treatise on shooting a Petronel

Please forgive the belated response regarding the extreme curvature of the buttstock and relative grain structure. Can't help but wonder: did any of the makers utilize the ancient process of STEAM BENDING the wood to retain the integrity of the grain?

    My German Wheellock replica

John, best wishes in your endeavor! I live in the USA, so can only speak from my experience. I have previously made a decent smallbore barrel from thick mild steel tubing, so searched the ubiquitous Amazon site for thick steel tubing and located this description for your perusal: 1" OD x 1/4"...

It can also mean the barrel is made of SAE/AISI 1137 low-carbon, high-manganese steel. (AKA “desulfurized” steel) Here's a link: https://blog.thepipingmart.com/grades/sae-aisi-1137-steel-uns-g11370-composition-properties-and-uses/

Round ball size for 12 gauge smooth bore percussion

First, Welcome to the Forum! Glad to see your posting. Since you are loading from the muzzle, the .710 diameter of the bore must allow ball plus the patch to be able to get through that smaller diameter of that muzzle. I would start with a ball of approximately .680 diameter and experiment with...
