The Big Dixie 1858 Remington NM

Hi Swandog - Is the model number on your new Rem RH0140? I called Dixie late in the day from CA to get more info but the gun smith was gone for the day and the lady asked me to call back tomorrow. I have three Pietta Remingtons which I really like but have always thought just a little more...

The Big Dixie 1858 Remington NM

That’s a handsome pistol, congratulations. There is no “large frame” Remington. Traditionally Pietta’s are a little larger than Uberti’s, overall. I’m taking your new gun to be a Pietta but have had to infer that since you haven't told us the maker (maybe I missed something). The frame in the...

BP Revolvers....What Am I Doing Wrong??!?!

+1 re Deputy Dog's mention of white lithium grease on the arbor/cylinder pin. In conjunction with a proper under-ball lubricant you can get 90-100 full load shots before the cylinder begins to bind (and meanwhile any foweling buildup in the bore will stay soft).

    Quick question on powder charge

Hi Bang - In your formula what does the 15.72 represent?

    Quick question on powder charge

Thirty-five grains in a brass .44 is definitely excessive. Thirty grains is really pushing it. Some owners consider their brassers as disposable items while others treat them as durables, meant to last. They will last too, if treated properly. Otherwise one will soon have a wall-hanger or a...

    Buying rolling papers

Nitrating cig papers is completely unnecessary. I use American Spirit. No delay, no hang fires and almost no residue. Nitrate if you want to but it makes no difference when shooting.

    Six shooter C&B

Hi Gene - R&D is good, it’s the American Way.

    Six shooter C&B

I won't be trying that anytime soon. It seems pointless and no way to treat a gun.

    Six shooter C&B

Yes, that's what the slots are for on a Remington. Are they safe? I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

    Six shooter C&B

The man that dropped his 5.5” Pietta Remington (Johnnie Roper, AKA Gunslinger) said the holster design was faulty. That defect allowed to gun to fall from the holster when he bent over. He later determined that the cylinder safety notch was too narrow to allow the hammer nose to properly fit...

    Six shooter C&B

If one is at the range or on level ground and not moving around significantly then loading six is just fine. Regardless of what type of holster one uses, if the shooter will be moving around (like walking trails, hiking broken ground or horseback) then the hammer on an empty chamber is...

    Showing off my C&B revolvers

I've been wondering that very thing, for years.

    Buying rolling papers

My first tabacker was Bull Durham in the cotton sack and I liked closing the bag like Rowdy Yates with one hand and my teeth, you know the drill. Agreed, end papers aren't nitrated - why would they be? Cig papers are plenty strong and heavy enough for our purposes.

    Showing off my C&B revolvers

Hey Drobs - lookin good there. When you installed those Wolff Springs on your Remington’s did they drop in ok or did you have to fit them some? Using a piece of garden hose over the rammer, a glove, with a pistol stand for leverage and just about anything can get loaded, eventually.

    Buying rolling papers

In N. Coastal Cali you could walk in the store smokin a blunt and no one would notice or even care if they did. I use American Spirit papers. They’re made of flax and burn up well. There are varieties of hemp paper too and those also combust really well and are strong, but rather expensive...

    Blackie Thomas (Great Videos)

He's tops. I have really enjoyed and benefited from all of his material. The man is a genuine asset. I subscribe, too.

    New Uberti Navy

Also, keep petroleum distillates away from the arbor/cylinder pin. I use a little Lubriplate 630 AA white lithium grease on those areas and it works great. Does anyone sell replacement screws for the protruding shoulder stock mounts that would be flush with the frame?

    Nearly lost my bolt screw

Fun fact on Pietta’s: The screw that secures the trigger/bolt return spring on their Remington’s is the exact same one that is the wedge screw on their Colt's and Colt type pistols. I learned that very important piece of info while placing my last order to VTI.

    Screws for Colt Shoulder Stock

Because of the plow handle grips on an 1860 I don’t come in contact with the shoulder stock support screws when shooting those but on my Pietta 1861 I do come in contact with them. They’re a bit sharp and a distraction. I would like to replace them with screws that are flush with the frame...

    Load for a .44 cal 1851 Navy

I’d be interested to know about that, too. Knowing the composition of current brass frames would be the first step in determining its tensile, compressive and shear strength relative to the steel currently used. I have heard that there is a significant amount of copper added to the brass as...
