Warm/Hot water when cleaning and flash rust

Just wanted to pass on a recent experience. Every time I've ever cleaned with water that was any warmer than tepid I have experienced seeing flash rust on the first dry patch I run down the bore. (Brit, I know how trivial you feel flash rust is). Quite a while back I remember reading someone...

    Random fliers...

I struggled with the same thing when first starting out with my TC Renegade. With a .015" prelubed patch it'd actually do pretty decent...but always a flier or two in a 5 shot group. Frustrating to have a 1" group going but then have one or two out of 5 shots open the group up to a 4"-5"...

    Lose cross pins?

You're referring to the "wedge pin(s)" that hold the barrel in the stock. It is fairly common for them to be a bit loose for a few different reasons. For loose wedge pins the best method to tighten them up is to bend the tenons slightly. The tenons are what's on the bottom of the barrel that...

    Carry strap options

If you don't want to connect the rear of the sling to the trigger guard, then there are also the kind that go over the butt of the rifle and lace up to hold in place.

LF a gunsmith in my area, north idaho

Idahoron lives in southern Idaho. Idaholewis might be a better bet for knowing someone reputable in northern Idaho. He is often on Modern Muzzleloader, a sister site to this one.

Need help with CVA Mountain rifle lock

I made it out for a bit last weekend to start testing loads for this. The trigger and lock functioned flawlessly. The trigger is definitely lighter once set than my Renegade, I will likely increase the travel a bit. I was shooting 50 yards from sandbags. .490 RB with a .015” cotton patch hand...

    Bore mops

I only use mine for lubing the bore after I've done a full cleaning, so it stays clean except for rust preventative. But I'd just hand wash it with hot water and dish soap.

    OUT OF SIGHT

CVA sells 100 packs of pillow ticking advertised as .015" thickness. They measure .0155 for me when I squeeze my calipers good and tight. I think you're better off to go to a Joanne's or similiar, ask for their pillow ticking stock location, and then get your calipers out. Best way to get...

    Micro adjustable powder measure?

Looks like that MVA would do exactly what you want. With that being said, set your measure at one of the marks, fill it to the top, and then dump the powder onto a scale and weigh it. Do this 20 times and see what the spread is. I did this a while back and had around a 2.2 grain spread. Many...

    OUT OF SIGHT

A .445 RB with an .015" patch will result in a .002" tighter combo than the .440 RB and .018" patch. The .445 RB is .005" bigger than the .440 RB, but the .015" patch is only .003" thinner than the .018" patch. But heck, it may like a .445 RB with a .010" patch. That's the fun of these...

Good shot groups at varying powder charge weights

With 2f powder. My Renegade groups are pretty decent at 75 grains but then opens back up at 80 and 85. Then at 90 they come back to the same as 75 grains. Haven't tried more than 90, with a PRB anyway. 3f. I started at 60 grains and the groups shrank all the way to 80 grains. I just stopped...

First shot varies...what would you do?

If windage is the problem on the clean bore shot then I'd play around with patch thickness and lube type. I believe you'll find a combo that resolves the left/right difference between clean bore and fouled bore. For high/low I see three options. 1. Try a tighter patch with the first clean...

    Black Powder Linguistic Pet Peeves

None of the slang terms relating to muzzleloading bother me too much. I generally will say "real black" to distinguish what powder I use, and caplock or sidelock when referring to the type of muzzleloader I prefer. Mainly because so few of people have much knowledge about muzzleloaders these...

    Walmart CCI caps misfire

I can only get two accurate shots out of my Renegade (I use Goex) before groups open up quite a bit. When first starting dummy me had developed a load and sighted in at the range swabbing between shots. Then I would go to a club shoot and not swab because the two guys I shot with acted like it...

    Walmart CCI caps misfire

CCI caps are CCI caps. Walmart gets caps that have gone through the exact same QC process as any other customer. CCI is ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified and isn't going to risk that certification by selling components that don't meet their set QC standards. They...

    Cleaning Question

With no rust showing on the cleaning patch I would bet that the black on the patch is simply some kind of bore preservative / rust preventative. When I run a patch down the bore of my rifle to strip the rust preventative back out before going shooting it always comes out with black marks. I...

Decided to go with "Long Range Rifle"

Spark, I use the exact same charge in my .54 Renegade. You're guessing pretty close, but I think it'll be around 3.5"-4" high at 50. At least from what I see with that charge and a pretty darn tight fitting PRB. How you hold is dependent on your preference. While Pete G would just use a fine...

    TC Hawken Rear Sight Assembly

So the rear most mounting screw for the base on yours sits under the roll pin pivot point? Mine didn't, but TC definitely had more than one base mount screw spacing assembly's. On mine I can pivot the sight assembly clear up and back, so it sits upside down on the barrel ahead of the base, and...
