need help choosing my next rifle

That is a really nice rifle! If it were me, I would get something different - say a nice smoothbore in your time era. But if you GOTTA have that patchbox, there are other good gunsmiths: http://www.billshipman.com/1780_Dickert_Gallery.htm

Your story lit some Bells and Rang Lights!

I use real black powder, 3F in gun and 4F in pan. I give the pan two pumps of the primer, then level it out. It's about half a pan full. If my flint is sharp, I never have any ignition problems ... and I haven't seen the flash in a v - e - r - y .... l - o - n - g time - I just see the...

    WTB .610" round ball mould

My 20 ga Chief's gun mikes at 0.609" (average of four measurements). I'll stick with a 0.600 ball and wads (might try tow), but might have to go SMALLER if I wanted to patch !!! Measure it before you buy anything !!!

    Smoothbore shooting help..

I assume you have no rear sight ? I'm still working on improving my groups, but off a front rest I had about a 5 inch group. All shots were on the 8x10" paper, and were the first 5 shots thru the gun using a 0.600 ball, 75 gr 3F, 1/8" wonder wad and overshot card over the unpatched ball. The...

Want to buy .610" RB mould or .610" RB's

TOW sells rbs in that size that you could try before buying a mould: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/127/3 TOW also sells the Lyman mould in .610, but it ain't cheap! http://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/1203/1 And that's without handles !!!

What do I do when the custom gunbuilder sends me garbage?

No problem ... I'm here to learn, and see - I've learned something today !!! Luckily I've never run into that kind of problem (or any kind, actually) on the custom/semi-custom guns that I have bought. If I had, I would have called the gunsmith IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner !!!

What do I do when the custom gunbuilder sends me garbage?

If you can't (or don't want to) try to fix the barrel (and if the barrel is the only problem), why not just buy another barrel and brown it yourself (or leave it in the white) ? Surely you know the brand of barrel used ??? I think the remarks about custom rifle makers were as unfair as untrue...

    Olive Oil Wad Lube?

That should be oleic acid SALT. Olive oil should be soluble in diethyl ether (which would evaporate well!), but that might be a bit hazardous.

    Olive Oil Wad Lube?

You might try a bit of surfactant (detergent, soap) to see if you can make your olive oil soluble - which is what they do with mineral oil in the "soluble oils" like Ballistol. Oleic acid might be ideal for this. Otherwise, you might need a higher MW alcohol (isopropyl, butanol or pentanol)...

    Dutch' s ratio 7:1 ???

My take: The opposite reaction does begin when the powder goes off, but the force has to overcome the inertia of the much heavier gun (vs. the lighter bullet), so it just appears to be a delay.

    TVM Custom build

You know, it might be best to step back awhile, enjoy the rifle you have, and save up for the rifle that you finally decide that you REALLY want. I agree that a credit card (unless you can pay it off the next month) is not a good way to go. Haste makes waste ... and possible dissatisfaction...

    TVM Custom build

FYI The shipping on my Va rifle was a bit over $100 (but 3 day priority). The shipping on my Chief's gun was $70. Not much a seller/builder can do about those costs except maybe give you a choice of shipping method. But even the cheapest method isn't "cheap" anymore ! And don't forget that...
