    CVA flint conversion

I have three CVA rifles I built around the same timeframe as yours. One is already a flintlock but I've got a cap lock big bore mountain rifles in .58 cal that I've often thought about converting. I'm assuming the lock lined up with the hole ok? And you must need to drill and tap for the...

Pietta 1860 Army Revolver Range Report

I agree that Pietta seems to be picking up their game. I have a pair of 1860s I use in cowboy action shooting. One is a Uberti and the other is a Pietta. Didn't mean to buy them like that.... it just worked out that way. Anyway shooting them side by side they both are great pistols. I do...

    Video- A cure for cap

Thanks as always Mike! I shoot cowboy action with my 1860s a little and had that happen more than once.. or twice. :) I changed the nipples to Slix and filled in the slot with JB weld but that stuff chips out every once in a while. This looks like it will fix the slot and not have to keep...

    Patches and lube?

Ive been shooting a long time and have been through a lot of homemade lubes and commercial versions. It wasn't till I found this recipe from this forum that I got hooked. Stumpy moose juice is the best as far as what I've used! I won't look any further...

Sighting in my .36 cal SMR

That is a beautiful rifle! I'd love to try my hand at building one again. I built several CVA kits back in the 70's and 80's. I found 30gr of fff hit the sweet spot for me. I'm casting my own balls using a Lee mold. .350 64gr. And a .010 patch. This what I'm shooting it out of. My TVM .36

Shot a flintlock for the first time a few days ago

Very nice rifle and grouping! You're like me... I just got my first flint this past January after building (from CVA kits) and shooting cap locks since the late 70's. Now that's all I want to shoot in the flint! Anyway, enjoy that beautiful rifle!

    Hello from MS

Hey! Welcome! I'm south of you in Covington, La... but don't hold that against me! :) My son is in his last year at Ole Miss. Actually we are going to meet him this weekend.

    Swabbing between shots

On the range I swab between shots every time. As you found out a dry patch isn't good. You need something that will dissolve the fouling. Tons of stuff out there from water to high priced store bought things. I've been using with great success this recipie. Stumpy's moose juice. It's the...

Range Rod length relative to barrel length

I bought one of October Country's brass range rods in the rifle and one in a pistol length. I got the ones with the wooden handles so I can't comment on the T handle length. I can say that I love those rods though. http://www.octobercountry.com/bench-ramrod-with-wood-handle/

    Black powder pistol a firearm?

As far as nipples go, I use Slix Shot on both of my 1860 Armys. I have one Pietta and one Uberti. There are other after market nipples that Ive heard are good, but never used them. Slix Shot is like night and day from the factory ones. I talked about them on another thread here...

    Bore Rust Colrain Barrels

I appreciate and respect what you're saying, but I've never had any black on my patches after cleaning. I don't scrub the bore with anything than a few patches, soap and water. Honestly I like cleaning my ML rifles more than my smokeless ones. Easier and quicker. The OP mentioned rust, so...

    Bore Rust Colrain Barrels

I've never used 3in1 oil as a last protectant so I cant comment on that. I have used simple green which works great, but so does soap and warm water. I've also tried Windex. What has me puzzled is the black streaks you have at the end of your cleaning session. I don't have any and I don't...

    CVA Mountain rifle

I have a CVA Big Bore Rifle in .58 that I bought and built myself around '80 or '81. Around the same time I built a .32 squirrel and a Kentucky flint in .45 from CVA also. Fun easy kits at the time. I just refinished the stock on it recently just because I was bored I suppose... :) anyway, I'm...

What do these patches tell you?

If you take what is in between the "Image" tags and paste it in your browser you can see them. Compared to mine, they look fantastic. No fraying at all.. or at least very minimal.

What do these patches tell you?

Thanks much for the tips, Marmotslayer. Yes, they are precut and as you pointed out probably could be bigger. I do get them unlubed though so at least I have that going for me! :) Next outing, I'll bring some larger ones and also try cutting them at the muzzle. I've owned muzzleloaders...
