    Aqua fortis and lye ?

A few months back I recall a post where there was a lye treatment to stocks before fortis to bring out the contrast in curly maple. I can no longer seem to find that information and was wondering if some one might have the information. Thanks Allen

Welcome to the forum. I currently live over here in Berryville and while I don't get to participate in monthly shoots at the moment, I try to shoot in the spring state match and the fall Luther Owens memorial shoot. The fall shoot I believe, falls in the third weekend in September , some one...

    Deer lost

That reminds me of another deer story that happened to me. I was walking up a over grown river bank a couple years ago when I jumped a buck that appeared to be of fairly decent size. He stopped for a split second and I took a shot that I was fairly confident was a good shot. The deer then ran...

    Beginner +. What to build?

I'd also recommend getting a good book like The Gunsmith of Greenville County or one the many others that explain the building process. Let's you know the tools needed and what's going to be involved in putting one together.

    Where to buy elk hide

I've ordered it from Springfield Leather a few time and liked what I got although it is chrome taned also. Give them a call and tell them what it's for and they might have something that suites your needs. Allen

    Deer lost

I've killed several deer over the years, maybe 35 or maybe more and the majority was with muzzleloader and prb . In that time I lost 3 deer one with bow, one with cf and one with muzzleloader. Most of the deer shot were with a 50 cal and a 54cal and the one that got away I shot in the leg which...

    barrel leading

What powder charge are you using? I have a 36 that had the same problem when I first got it. It had a fairly fast twist and shallow rifling. I reduced the powder and accuracy improved greatly. I think my original load was just skipping over some of the rifleing .

    smoothbore vs. fowler?

I thought the difference in them was you carried a fowler in a case and you carried a musket in a tow sac. Oh wait , that was the difference in a violin and a fiddle. Sorry :hmm: :rotf:

    first knives

I recently found an old knife I had made when I was ten or twelve years old. It was made from an old disc blade and though pretty crude and rough it held an edge very well. A couple weeks ago I gave it to a friend mainly as a joke because it was it was rough and my workmanship has come a long...

    New blood?

I consider my self as a young person in this field , sort of as I am younger than 30 and started when I was about 12. I was a bit intimidated when I first started but there was a guy I met at the first ronde I went to that took me in under his wing and showed me the ropes and for that I am...

    Metal Ramrod

I used a metal one for years but like Ohio Ramrod said I always used a bore guide to protect my rifling. About three years ago I broke my ramrod the day before deer season and took a bare hickory rod that I had laying around to get me by till the next week when I had more time to finish it...

    Pipe Tomahawk?

They are a tapered fit. Most of the heads I've seen are polished, or polished and then browned as the castings can be a bit rough. I don't have pics but I finished one of mine with an alcohol stain finished with true oil gunstock finish. I then cut down the gloss with steel wool. Another place...
