    Percussion cap availability

Local gun shop has them for $4.95 per hundred, both 10s and 11s. Ron

A cure for cap sucking Colt C&Bs

I'll try that. It can't hurt and might help. Thank you for pointing it out. How is the shoulder? Ron

    Emty handed!

Great photo! It captures so much in one frame. Thanks for posting it, Ron

    Steam Cleaning Flintlock Rifle Barrel

I keep it simple: I take a container of water and dish soap with me to the range along with plenty of patches, rags, and the proper jags. I do a wipedown and drying after several shots. At the end of the session, I fill the barrel with the slightly soapy water and let it sit for a few minutes...

    New show Iron and Fire

That is the first thing my wife said when she watched the program for the first and only time! Ron

    New show Iron and Fire

Time to share what happened when I was at a "reality" show shoot. There was a gun shop oriented show that featured a store near Denver, CO; the "owner" of the shop; his wife; a self-absorbed teenage daughter; and a son who played a minor role. This shop was about 1 mile away from my home and I...

    Colorado Rev War

There were a few, local reenactments that took place this last weekend and there was one in April. Alas, I saw your post too late for those. I frequently go up to Ft. Lupton from my home in Golden to shoot traditional muzzleloaders or to attend Rendezvous. As soon as I heal from some surgery...

    Colorado Rev War

I've found several rendezvous, but so far only one Colonial or Revolutionary War period gathering. Colonial Encampment Early Set-up: Sept 24-25, 2016 Camp Dates: Sept 30-Oct 2, 2016 Ft. Lupton, CO Ft. Lupton is about 1/2 hour South of Ft. Collins. Ron

    Muzzleloading reigns. Period!

I've come to the same, compulsive conclusion. I love shooting the muzzle loaders whenever I can! Still, I enjoy pointing some 30-06 down range with a 1943 M1 Garand; a 30 cal from an M1 Carbine; a 45-70 through a trapdoor Springfield; a 303 with a Enfield No. I Mk III from WWI; a 6.5 x 55...

When a material binds to the surface of a solid particle, it is adsorbed. Absorption is the case in which a fluid permeates or is dissolved by a liquid or solid. Ron

Welcome! We are Virginians, but left there 30 years ago. Ron

    Charge holders

I am talking about side lock, front stuffing pistols, but I think I can see the source of the miscommunication. I sit a patch over the hole in the loading board, and place a round ball on top of the patch and push it in. Then I can put powder in the pistol or rifle, place the patched ball over...

    Using loading blocks?

I keep my loading blocks filled with balls and patches in plastic baggies. That keeps the patches from drying out quickly. Of course I use historically correct plastic baggies. Ron

    Charge holders

I have an excellent reason for using patched ball holders: given my current level of woodworking skills, it is one of the only wooden items I can build without messing it up. Ron

    CVA hawken worth?

FML is the one who did all the work on the CVA I have. Shoots better than many much more expensive rifles I have used. Ron

    CVA hawken worth?

I think that $100 for the CVA with a good barrel/bore is very reasonable. I have a CVA Hawken I bought used. The stock has been refinished, the barrel bedded, all contacting parts of the firing mechanism and trigger polished. It makes for a good project and my rifle shoots very well. Ron

    Fitting a Flash Hole liner

Success! Using many of the ideas here, I have filed the liner and it now sits flush. Thank you all! I found a 5/16 nut that fit, and that was no easy feat as I only had one nut out of many with identical threads to the liner. Next, I cut the nut with a Dremel, and placed the nut and liner in...

    Fitting a Flash Hole liner

Indeed, the face of the liner is "proud" of the barrel. Not much, but enough to feel it. I like the idea of threading the liner into a nut first before putting it into a vise. Thank you both! Ron

    Fitting a Flash Hole liner

I recently picked up an old Hatfield rifle from the 1980s. It had been part of a pair, one a flintlock, the other a percussion. My rifle is the percussion. I bought an L&R Hatfield flint lock and a flash hole liner that is for the Hatfield. All fits nicely - almost. When I close the frizzen, it...
