Yep, returned home empty handed. Missed a couple rabbit and a few pigeon.

This Bess frustrates me a little.
It needs a lot of powder and shot or velocity is very low.
It is wad fussy.
But the lock is good and hardly ever fails.

I was using some greased aper pulp type of commercial wad in this .750" bore.
Never liked them, tonight in an old quarry I tested them again. The load was wide, to wide and a huge hole in the middle, a true dough nut pattern!

I was out of shot all but one ounce so in desperation I tipped powder and shot down with green birch leaves betwixt for a wad and the same on top.

Guess what! It throws a lovely evenly spread and not too wide pattern all be it a little slow.

I am going to burn the rest of them dumb 10g wads! They are wasting my powder and shot!!

B :(

I like greased tow, or hemp fibers, or even wool blanketing picked apart. I find commercial wads too much of a pia to load.
Howsomever, an empty bag from a day afield, is better then the best day at work. And I see you post more then one success, it is always good ' to hear from you chaps on the other side of the pond'

Not empty handed - you didn't lose your gun. Things could have been worse. LOL!!

Or were they the Queen's? ? ?

That's the "Bess" picture you posted yet.... :haha:

It happens to us all eventually.....

Britt, have you tried punching wads from thick stiff veg tan leather? ....Say about .20 thick or better.....?

Only thin leather sir. A card and leather works in this gun yes.

Laddie, Laddie, Laddie...., :shake:

Do ya no ken that a Bess of any size is meant to be slayin' Frenchmen? Of course it's disagreeable to shooting critters.

Now, have you thought about hunting French Hens and French Rabbits? Perhaps even chips (aka French Fries?) :haha:

It could also be the venue. I shot my first turkey the other day, but the manager of the frozen food section banned me from the store.

That is why it is called "hunting" and not "harvesting".
BTW is that a short Bess or just the angle in the picture making it look that way? Where did you get it?

Yes a short Bess sir.
