    Goex v. Pyrodex v. Triple 7

That American Pioneer stuff was horrible. My first year of ML I purchased some cause there was a shortage of BP as well as even subs where I live and got some AP up in PA at a Gander MT (another failed venture). The 2F was more like 1F. very chunky and inconsistent. I heard the same of...

    T/C cleanout screw size/thread pitch?

clean out screw in the bolster? For my Hawken I gave to my son, I always put some anti sieze on it before putting back in. Definitly not locktite cause I wanted to get it out for extensive cleaning.

Using flush nipple without making a mess?

For my Hawkens, I remove the barrel and nipple and place into a bucket. That's super easy, But what are you guys with pinned barrels doing to plug the nipple? How about a flintlock with a flashhole? when you clean and pump, what are you doing with the nipple, are you plugging? How?

    Secondary Pan Powder Stash

I guess you could wrap it in tape or something else to mark it. If you look on amazon for "plastic vials" there are lots of choices. I often pre measure my powder at home and put into plastic vials. Those go into a zip lock bag in case they open up in transport, Then neatly into a plastic...

Is excess powder really blown out?

Well, we know it can happen with smokeless : This was posted on another forum. The fire ignites on the far left lane but if you notice, it spreads to powder on each of the other lanes as well. Unknown what they were shooting and if any defective shells were involved...

    Igniting a failing flintlock

OK, Not sure if this has been asked before but how might one ignite a failing flintlock? So far I have been lucky that all my misfires, I have been able to deal with by just cocking again and firing. At my range, they call cease fires every 30 minutes. They make everyone wait until any...

How do you determine if there is a patent breech?

Just to add to the above, a $25 USB borescope from Amazon is a good investment. Not only for muzzleloaders but you will find other reasons to have one eventually if you DIY around the house. I have one that is wifi ($35) and hooks up to my phone that I have taken to gunshows. that and one of...

    Traditions Kit Modified build

Very nice work. Did you use a wood conditioner before staining? My first ML kit was a Lyman where I applied just Tung oil, so when I built a Traditions pistol, it did not go so well with just Tung and was very splotchy. What brand and color stain did you use?

Dry balling - why won't it come out??

Like already mentioned. Grease gun works I can not remember the exact details but with a sidelock I had, I had bunched up my patch and I could not for the life of me push the ball all the way down. (I think I was patch cutting). I could not pull it out either. I had 80grains of powder...

Recommendations on a 1861 Springfield kit.

HOLD OFF ON a TRADITIONS I say. I say this cause I ordered an 1853 Enfield kit from muzzle-loaders.com It came in about a week. They shipped the barrel set into the stock instead of being seperate. When I saw it I thought "that is stupid", Well, it was. The barrel banged around while being...

Can the need to swab be fixed?

I am not the most experienced Muzzle loader but will add something new to the thread. When I started out, I had 2 Pawn shop CVA side locks then purchased a Lyman GPR 54 Kit which I then started to look more at accuracy. At the time, real BP was scarce around me and I hesitated to travel to...

    Shooting blanks

So, This weekend on New years, we grabbed my Son's 50 cal Hawken and I intended to shoot into the air. I loaded with about 20 grains of FFG and then a cap. If it ignited the BP, I sure did not hear it. We ran 2 more caps and just heard the caps go off. When running a wet patch down, I heard...

Dixie gun works cub 40 cal Flint

I picked up this kit second hand at one of my favorite gun shops out in the countryside. He got it on trade in and I picked it up for $270. Link I have all the major fitting of the stock done, Just need to do a final hi grit sand on it and I"m ready to stain/oil it. I have yet to decide on...

    Value of a TC Hawkin?

FWIW, I got my TC Hawken with a great condition barrel for $200 on armslist last year. He had it at $300 for 2 months as I watched him lower to $250, then called and offered $200. Baltimore-Washington area

How long can you leave the gun loaded?

Hmm, Accuracy would be my concern. I hear plenty of people say "it fired fine" but if it misses, would not be worth the ease of keeping it loaded. I'm not sure I"ve heard too many claims on how it affects accuracy to leave it loaded. I have been patching barricade, then dry patching before...

    sighting in

Move rear sight in the direction you want the bullet groups to move. If you are hitting left of center, you want your groups to move right, so move rear sight right. Adjustments to the front sight are opposite that logic. Start at 25 yards. There are posts here about working up a load. My...

    Target Shooting

BTW, what ML did you get for target shooting? My son expressed an interest and that allows me to spend $$ on him and not me which widens the budget :)

    Target Shooting

Dutch's documents are worth the read. Its a bit all over the place if you ask me but if you read all of it, it will give you something to think about. As a fellow newbie I can agree that offhand accuracy takes LOTS of practice. My first shoot this summer, I was flanked by a 70 year old guy and...

    Track o Wolf pillow ticking

Well, did some testing today. The TOW patches are definitly not a good substitute for my Walmart Ticking. My walmart Ticking is washed, then hand cut. My groups almost doubled @ 50 yards from the bench using the TOW patches. I then shot the Washed Walmart ticking and the groups were nice and...
