    Browning a TC lock

Absolutely. I'd strip the bluing off. Best thing to do is take the lock apart. (Take a pic or draw a sketch so you know how to put it back together) Get a glass jar or bowl and soak the lock plate, hammer and hammer screw in a strong toilet bowl cleaner. ( I like to use sno-bowl) Use gloves...

    Hawken Building

Dang, I new someone would catch that. Well, to make a long story short. I aquired a "free" brand new .50 T/C lock and barrel that I was going to use as a drop in replacement for my T/C .45 hawken that I use for deer hunting. But figured why bother changing a perfectly fine rifle and have an...

    Blue vs Brown

Actually, read the LMF browning instructions posted at the top of this forum page. The proccess is pretty much the same for any of the "cold" browning solutions out there.

In most cases same process as browning but the parts are boiled in distilled water between coats.

    Hawken Building

Just finished this one. It's a collection of parts and pieces from 4 different suppliers. Not an exact replica but a more "authentic looking" 50 cal. Hawken. (Sorry, I'm having major issues trying to post pics on this site)

    Problems with T/C hawkens

Glad to see you sent it back. I while back I got a 50 cal T/C barrel and some parts from a guy that broke his stock trying to cram a 50 cal RB down the barrel. He gave up on it and threw away the stock instead of contacting T/C and sending it back. We checked the barrel and found it was a...

    Really amateur Q

I use sno-bowl toilet bowl cleaner and a stiff tooth brush. You can strip a whole barrel clean in less than 5 minutes. Just make sure you wear gloves and do it in well ventilated area. Probably any good strong bowl cleaner will work.

You can buy a pre inletted stock from them or have the lock of your choice inletted for a small fee.

    steel screws

MLBS has a good selection of steel "oval" head screws, But I don't know if they are "period correct" for the Hawken half stock that I'm finishing up on which has all steel furniture on it.

    steel screws

Anyone got a good source for unplated steel flat head slotted wood screws at "reasonable" prices?

Cold browning Lyman .54 GPR Barrel

Actually, I was using Davis metal brown and the coppering happened on the 5th application. I've done a few before using that stuff and always had excellent results. I was able to save it by steel wooling it off and continuing the process. (I always just card with denim and never used steel wool...

    Flintlock Bedford Rifle

Try "Gunsmiths of Bedford,Fulton,Huntingdon & Somerset Counties by James B Whisker and Larry W Yantz" It's full of original photos of Bedfords and the history of its gunsmiths. Got mine from track of the wolf a few years back. Good book.

Cold browning Lyman .54 GPR Barrel

Anyone have a problem with getting a copper coating form while browning? What's a good way of removing it? Or does one need to sand it off and start all over?
