    Need Advice on Stock Staining

Laurel mt stains are alchohol based so you could dilute them down abit. Try on a scrap piece and work your way up instead of trying to sand color off. If you apply all those colors full strength over one another in what ever order, you'll probably end up with mud. It's best to just stick with...

    Damn! Broken stock

Ya thats a shame. I've had situations like that before. Suppliers don't always realize how abusive mail/parcel couriers are with packages. ( doesn't matter who) They get thrown, dropped, kicked and tossed over fences like yesterdays trash. They could care less what's in them. Even if it's marked...

    Chambers Kits

Got my eye on the Lancaster kit for sure, also the Kentucky pistol but that one is way too much on cost for a pistol. Nice job by the way. What finish did you use on the Lancaster?

    Rod question

Here's a cheap but effective tool anyone can make. Just a simple hard wood dowel about 2-1/2" long with a 10-32 or 8-32 machine screw and nut. I carry in my possibles bag with my other accessories one might need. It saved my @$$ more than once for those unfortunate incidences. :headslap:

Flintlocks unreliable? :hmm: The "myth" is only in the minds of the misinformed and the inexperienced.

    Barrel patterning help

Interesting way to make a barrel. I'm not out to duplicate those barrels exactly. Just trying to come up with something close or some kinda pattern just to be different. I like the method wattsy has going on there. But maybe a smaller dia. cord and browning solution instead of viniger. So, does...

    Barrel patterning help

I've seen from time to time barrels with either a molted or stripe pattern etching (Brown/blue) done on rifle/pistol barrels. Can anyone explain how this is done? I'd like to brown stripe my pisol barrel. Does one put browning solution on then wrap the barrel with cotton clothes line/rope or...

    Powder horn help

Thanks all for the suggestions. I did try a heat gun to soften up the end. It was enough to fit the round plug in without cracking the horn. It worked out good.

    Powder horn help

I know this might sound like a dumb question. Can one soften a horn simply by boiling it in water? I need to get the open end round to fit a plug. (I built plenty of rifles in my day but just never attempted to built any powder horns) :idunno:

    Traditions Trapper Pistol Kit

If you already built the Hawken, then you know what to expect. Same quality type, just a different style. I just finished properly fitting all the parts and bedded the lock and barrel in. Should turn out nice when finished.

    Traditions Trapper Pistol Kit

I just started one of these. I have an older kit but I assume not much has changed. So far it's just like putting together a CVA. Parts just don't exactly line up or fit perfectly so some minor rework and adjustment is in order. Especially in the lock and barrel inletting. Can it be put...

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments guys. Funny thing. When my father gave me this pistol a few weeks ago, I thought, where did you get this piece of S***! But it felt good in my hand so I took a crack at cleaning it up abit. I never was able to get all the staining out of it even...

Well, I finished my restoration project. Spent alot time searching for screws and making new parts. But with alittle "spit and polish", I was able to save it from the garbage can.
