    Other than a Hawken.....

Are Hawken rifles the only rifle that used a hooked breech system? I am specifically interested in a long fullstocked flintlock rifle. I have seen pictures of period rifles that look like they used barrel wedges to hold the barrel but I can't find any info on if they utilize a hooked breech...

What do you store in your patchbox?

Like Mike I don't carry anything it. I've had them open to often on accident to trust putting anything in. However with my latest rifle I have not had any accidental openings but I've been so long not using them I'm not sure what I want to put in it.

    Buckskin Wisdom

I wonder if one of those welding blankets from Harbor Freight or something along those lines would work? I'm not sure what the fire retardent abilities are or the chemical make up is but you might try something along those lines.

    Gold Plated Muzzleloaders?

I know a guy that has some gold plating on parts of the lock. The pan was plated and some other parts. It wasn't guady it was very artistic and pretty but still made me think "I'd never shoot it". To all of our surprise he shot it and outshot most of us with it.

    Really new at this

Welcome to traditional muzzleloading, you're gonna love it. You can use your powerbelts or maxiballs or whatever you prefer, I'll let others who are more familiar with a TC to comment on what may work better. A lot of folks here prefer the old fashioned round ball for tradition and the fact...

    CAMP CHAIR HELP NEEDED!

I tried one of those for my first chair. Did ok but wasn't very comfortable. The angle of the seat to the back wasn't right and it felt like I was laying back all the time. The effort of sitting up straight for any period of time in the thing made me start looking for another alternative. It...

    CAMP CHAIR HELP NEEDED!

I second what HalfMoon posted. I built one following the same plans in an afternoon. And it is holding up well.

    Side Seam Moccasins

Anybody out there use these regularly? I made a pair and the point where the side stitch meets the back stitch hits my heel in a bad way. I'm wondering if I did something wrong or if that's just the nature of these mocs? I think part of the problem is that I'm using a moc/chap split that is...

    Braintan Questions

If you do a dry scrape you can work it at your leisure once you get the "meat" side cleaned up. That could take a couple of hours depending on the hide and your profeciency at working it. When you get to the actual braining you are still going to need hours to work it until it drys.

    PC Deer Hunt

Looks like I have my answer.. Use scents, charcoal liners, bait, don't worry about the wind and most important of all use one of them fancy in*$&@^&# with a big ole scopey thingamajig (just had to kick a chunk under it) :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: Thanks guys, points made and listened to...

    PC Deer Hunt

My partner and I are going to fill our deer tags (positive thinking) the PC way. One of the things we are debating are the scent block sprays. I know they aren't PC but he's leaning towards wanting to use them and I don't have expierence one eay or another. Are there any alternatives? I was...

    Straightening Brass Trigger Guard

What is the best way to straighten a brass wax cast trigger guard? Building a kit and the guard is off a little bit, not much but more than a little tweak. Will heating it up affect it or is there a better way. Thanks

Stumpy's Moose Snot and the Loading Block

Thanks for all the replys. Stumpkiller you hit on the head what I was looking for. I figured to start with moose snot to see how it works and to take advantage of of the time and research already done on it. I typically load and shoot so I've just always used a spit patch but now with a hunt...

Stumpy's Moose Snot and the Loading Block

Ok this may sound like a stupid question but I've never seriously messed with loading blocks before. How do you load up the patch material with the snot? Do you get the snot hot and into a liquid state and soak the patch material in it, then load into block with ball? Do you load ball and...

    TVM Kits

I built one of TVM's early Virginia rifles years ago. I thought it went together real easy. For a guy with no talent I (and others) think it turned out nice. And it's a good shooter to.

    Waterproofing canvas

I'd think it might make the bag to brittle or fragile. It is real easy to tear linseed oiled treated cloth. The metal parts on the rifle might tear it up fast. The stuff I oiled is probably a 10oz canvas the results might be better if the canvas is heavier. If you really are wanting to keep...

    Lewis & Clark Expedition Rifle?

I think you're thinking of New York...no wait a minute that's where he found the magic golden plates that only he could read with special glasses. I'm not sure what went down in Utah except trying to run Ole Gabe out of the territory. If the rifle really does exist it would be like finding the...
