What do you store in the patchbox of your rifle? Are they functional or more ornamental to you?
Thank you,
Billk

I don't have a patch box on my current rifle, but on my past rifle, and the one I built my dad I put in the cleaning jag, ball puller, a spare flint or two, extra leather piece, a couple of extra round balls, and some patching material. That way you've got plenty of back up/emergency stuff for a day in the woods without really having to carry too much extra if you don't want to.

Like tnlonghunter, I carry a spare flints, leather, a jag, worm and a strip of patching. I wrap it all in the patching to keep it from rattleing.

My .54 Cabela's hawkin has a nice brass patchbox with a cavity that I cut deeper with a dremel. In the bottom is lubed patch, then a cut down 35mm film canister with a measured amount of powder, ball and cap for a second load.

Actually I would like to have one on my .54 Lyman GPR-Hunter but I've never been brave enough to tackle the task.

Often nothing. Sometimes dry patches. Sometimes a vent pick and patches. I carry tools in my bullet pouch. I have seen one original rifle from the Golden Age with two paper cartridges in the box. I think many originals also carried such items as patches and gunworms...

a spare flint with leather glued in place. I carry a vent pick and a hammer stall on a thong (same thong) hanging from the trigger guard...Hank

Like Mike I don't carry anything it. I've had them open to often on accident to trust putting anything in. However with my latest rifle I have not had any accidental openings but I've been so long not using them I'm not sure what I want to put in it.

Not to deviate from the original topic but that's a heck of a good idea Hank. No fumbling with the flint and leather.

I don't put anything in my patch(butt)box.

I keep my cell phone, GPS, and survival gear in there:

Stale air and maybe some dust bunnies in mine. Don't like them, won't use them and prefer the looks of my rifles that don't have them.

I keep two flints w/ lead wrap, ball puller, 6-8 Grouse breast feathers to plug the touch hole. The patch box has a sliding- wooden cover. The feathers also keep everthing nice and cozy.

Just jokin'! I usually carry a flint and a tow worm and a cleaning jag with a wad of cotton scrap to keep everything from rattling. Oh yeah, and a piece of brass snare wire for cleaning the touch hole out.

I keep my dryballs and doublecharges in there - so that they won't get mixed with my regular balls and single charges....
