Finally a shootable buffalo hunter .58

Nice grouping, I picked up a Buffalo Hunter in a pawn shop a few years ago and it like a PRB over 70 grains of 3F Geox for target load. The trigger guard on mine doesn't have any boss on it at all, both ends are the same. Wonder if the previous owner removed it.

    Hammer alignment

Looks like your nipple is too short as Zonie stated. They come different lengths but if the gun goes bang I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've a CVA Hawken that has the opposite problem, it came with a longer nipple and shoots just fine, just looks a little funny. Try some real black powder...

    Stuck clean out screw

I use one of the cheap Harbor Freight hammer impact screwdrivers on stuck clean out screws. Been using them for years on guns with buggered up screw heads.

    Miniature Cannon and cannon ball

Nice cannon, maybe .50 caliber? I would shoot it with a mild load of BP,maybe 20-30 grains of 2F and a patched RB, plenty of thickness in the barrel from the picture. I bet the cannon ball on the rear of the carriage is there for ballast to keep the cannon from jumping around when shot.

    Some of the Collection

Undead, the Mountain rifle has a 32 inch barrel, The Hawken has a 28 inch and the Frontier has a 24 inch barrel. I also have a Monarch Hawken caplock with a 18 inch barrel that was so bubba'd I turned it into a trade style rifle with copper tacks. Here's a picture of it right after I finished...

I like that Kentuckian with the full stock. Thanks for sharing.

    Some of the Collection

During all the down time I thought it might be fun to share a picture of my cap lock collection with everybody. They are nothing special, a CVA Mountain rifle, a CVA Hawken, a CVA Frontier and a Traditions Kentucky pistol all in .50 caliber with brown barrels. Picked most of them up with small...

    Rehardening my frizzen

Rehardening a frizzen will change the patina. The quenching will turn the metal black at least it has with anything I've oil quenched like springs, frizzens and knife blades. De land is right about needing carbon in the metal for the hardening to work and produce sparks. Quenching low carbon...

    Rehardening my frizzen

Hardening a frizzen is pretty easy just heat it till it glows red and a magnet doesn't stick to it then quench it in a light oil. I use transmission fluid to quench with. I've had a few frizzens that were made out of low carbon steel and wouldn't spark no matter what I tried. Did the lock ever...

    Cva drum n firing issues

Check the face of the hammer, sometimes spent caps will lodge there and even build up causing miss fires. I had that problem with a basket case CVA Mountain rifle I picked up. Had to dig four spent caps out of the cup that hits the nipple. They were covered with a build up of carbon and couldn't...

    Rust stopping oil

I start with a few passes with a brush and a few drops of dish washing soap to loosen any crud. Then submerge the breach end in a bucket of water and pump with patches till they come out clean. For rust protection I spray a lot of WD40 down the barrel and follow up with two or more patches to...

Stand up brass tube flask, safe on shooting bench?

I always have a small piece of towel on the bench to wipe my hands on. I lay my brass powder dispenser on it's side and toss the towel over it. I also make sure there's no powder in the dispenser tip after measuring the charge.

    Black powder

I usually order five or more pounds from Graff's and keep an eye on the Hazmat charge. Sometimes Graff's will drop the Hazmat down to ten dollars which is nice. They always have that handling fee though. Just was given about ten pounds of mixed BP along with another eight pounds of Pyrodex so...

Navy Arms 58 cal Buffalo Hunter

I've one that shoots a 535 grain minnie ball over 60 grains of 3F nicely at 50 yds. Haven't shot it much with a PRB but you should get a range rod no matter what you shoot, the factory ram rod looks a little flimsy.

    I have a dumb question.

I've been using a seiler small rifle frizzen on my Investarms Hawken. The angle of the frizzen gives a better spark.

Well I had to Bring it Home

No country of origin on the barrel just "Connecticut Valley Arms Inc." and .50 caliber. I heard that the first style MR had hexagon ram rod sleeves and the made in USA marking on the barrel which was supposed to of been made by Douglas. This one has the round steel sleeves and the barrel could...

Well I had to Bring it Home

Yes, it's an early CVA with steel furniture, set trigger and round ram rod sleeves. The four screw patch box sold it, didn't even haggle. I'm a sucker for rebuilding an abused muzzle loader. With the replacement butt plate and the ram rod I'm into it for $130.00. ;)

Well I had to Bring it Home

I was over at the Alifia Rendezvous last week and found this on a blanket. It was missing the butt plate, ram rod and had a bore plugged up with a bunch of crud and what looked like oily powder and a patch. For a hundred dollars I had to bring it home. I have already scrubbed the crud out...

    Black streak

Run a bronze brush two or three times down the bore first with straight dish washing detergent on it to break loose any carbon and oils. After that do the pump in a bucket of water thing using a cleaning jag and patches till they come out clean. Patch dry and then oil,it's not rocket science.

    CVA Mountain Pistol

The CVA Kentucky pistol in .50 caliber has a 1 in 20 twist, it's marked on the barrel. Don't know about the Mountain pistol but would think it's the same.
