Colonial era blackpowder vs today's black powder.

The recipes of black powder has changed over the years. Some of the documented early recipes from the French and English in the 18th century use more sulfur and potassium nitrate than the current commercial recipe. The type of wood that the charcoal is made out of also is the main factor as how...

    Best inexpensive BP pistol

A lot will depend on your budget, Traditions makes an affordable and accurate Kentucky pistol while Pedersoli uses nicer wood and is better looking over all but costs more. I shoot a Traditions Kentucky .50 caliber cap lock and like it. Picked it up at a gun show for $100.00 which was a steal...

    Rare TC Stainless Hawken?

A little battery acid will give stainless a nice patina, did it to a Swiss Army knife blade by accident. :) The lower quality stainless steels will pit and corrode when exposed to the chlorine found in bleach. Seen stainless steel hot water heaters get destroyed by high city water chlorine...

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

From what I understand the Buffalo Hunter was based off the 1863 Contract rifle but came with a heavier barrel, it wasn't just a cut down version of the Remington. When I picked mine up the pawn shop also had a Navy Arms 1863 in .58 caliber and a side by side comparison showed that the Buffalo...

    Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter?

Nice score, I have the Buffalo Hunter made by Navy Arms and it came with both a regular #11 nipple and a musket cap nipple in the patch box. That's the model that was taken to Africa. The lock and hammer looks about the same for wear and color when compared to my Buffalo Hunter.

    My Toy CVA Cannon

Nice cannon, I have a .50 caliber on a wagon carriage which I bought about 40 years ago, the barrel looks similar to your's. Think I got through Cabella's as a kit. I load mine with 25 grains 2F and use a wad of aluminum foil for packing. Makes a goodly noise ;) I've shot a few round balls...

    Double Set triggers

Why don't you just adjust the set trigger so the front trigger has a heavier pull. I can adjust the double trigger on my Hawken so the front trigger needs a good pull instead of being a hair trigger. Why reinvent the wheel? Just something that might work without swapping any parts.

    Strong Firearms Parrot Cannon

I picked this .50 caliber bronze Parrot cannon up about two years ago at a flea market. Took a while to track down who made it, I ended up finding that it dates from the 1860's and was made by the Strong Firearms company. They marketed it in their catalog as a safe alternative instead of using...

    Range boxes

I made my box for rendezvous shooting where a wooden box is appropriate and tried to build it around the supplies I would need, I was also limited by how much wood I had to work with. My possible bag ended up getting too small for a day at the range but still works for a woods walk where I don't...

    Range boxes

The cypress was from a recycled bee hive top and the box roughly measures 21" long 9" wide and 8" high. Hated to throw the wood away, the hive body was probably 50 years old. The shoulder strap was a must, one shoot I go to has a good hike to get to the range. I'm working on a small cart to...

    Range boxes

Man that's pretty, love the different woods on it. Here's mine made out of 5/8 inch Cypress. The brass corners were left over from a gun case I made but didn't like the look of them on the corners. I cut the lid of the box so it sits flat and can be used as a work area. I also store a heavy...

    Range boxes

Don't have a picture of mine but the bigger you make it the more stuff you will end up lugging around. Figure out what you will and then add a little extra to the size of the box. I got burned by building my range box to fit specific types of supplies like the Goex metal cans. Now Goex comes in...

    Built a pistol loading stand

Thanks, the leather is glued onto the wood with some contact cement, nothing fancy as long as it holds. I was thinking about tacking it on the ends just for show but never got around to it. Brass wingnuts and studs would look great, go for it. I was using the stuff found in my 5 gallon nut...

    Safety Advice

Haven't bough a loaded muzzle loader yet and I do check for them but got a powder horn from a pawn shop last year that had about a half pound of black powder still in it. The powder was lumped up and wouldn't shake so I'm guessing the pawn shop didn't know it was there. Poked the powder out with...

    Built a pistol loading stand

Here are my two loading stands. The first is made out of some 5/4 re-purposed poplar shelving, is heavy and a prototype. The second is made out of some cherry I had laying around the shop. They both come apart for travel and the one made out of cherry can double as a display stand. I copied the...

    BP's for Survival

I always figured that after SHTF there would be a quick and ugly shooting war and most people wouldn't be around long enough to use up their ammo stockpiles. Most of the game animals would be hunted out pretty quickly also. Using a BP firearm early on would just get me killed faster but in 20 or...

    Hmmm. what to do.

Oh no man,you need to make it BIGGER, solder a chunk of brass on it the size of a Caddy. But really, cutting it off would make the wrist area look cleaner, can't see why not to remove it.

    Making what you need.

I've made a few shooting bags, nothing fancy just a bag with a strap and buckle. I figure that most home made mountain man shooting bags were pretty simple and tossed together with what ever was handy at the time.
