    Larger Flash Hole

I was just reading up on this subject yesterday. There's a good thread HERE on this forum. I also found THIS ARTICLE discussing the tests done to determine sizing. It seems 1/16" is plenty adequate if one gives the exterior a slight countersink to flare out the opening. Anything above 5/64"...

Raw wool instead of flax tow

You are wrong again. Some parchment paper is coated with silicone to reduce sticking, but it certainly does not contain silica fiber.

    Thought I was sold....

Danish oil is slightly ambering. I use Watco's, their natural color. I believe they also make an amber tone. Danish oil is also fairly water resistant, and easy to apply.

Raw wool instead of flax tow

Cooking parchment is not fire retardent. Ovens simply don't get hot enough to set it on fire.

Just click on the edit button and remove the words. It's kinda funny if you leave it, though. Everyone will wonder what in heck it was about! 🙃

Do you think that modern ML firearms have any investment value?

The only guns that ever become investments are those that survive and remain in exceptional condition over time. That Winchester rifle that sold for $20 some 100 years ago may be worth a couple of thousand today, but so would that $20. Today's Kiblers will be no different.

How do you tune a set trigger?

Do you know what brand set triggers they are? Can you post a picture of the assembly?

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

Is it unusual, or just descriptive of one individual? My wife often wears leggings. Is that so unusual today as to be noteworthy? Or just describing her style? An unfounded assumption. Not true. When something is new and demonstrates an advantage, the military can be very quick to adopt it...

    Vintage brass

I find old brass just has a look new brass can never duplicate. It develops an amber undertone from age no amount of polishing can remove, unlike artificial methods. One method that may help dull the newness is to heat the brass with a propane torch, then put in a vinegar-peroxide bath. The...

I didn't mean to imply the only known finish was polished bright. I was specifically thinking of in the white.

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

The original question was about 1770s arms. What came out of the Hawken shop is irrelevant. Same for 1803 Harper's Ferry arms. It has been cited here that some barrels have been pulled from stocks, and there is a lack of conclusive evidence they were blued or browned. So no, there weren't 3...

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

There is a post in this thread citing a recipe for a "varnish" to apply on barrels. It would have been an effective way to prevent a wrought iron barrel from rusting while reducing its shine and maintenance. It may have been so commonplace before American makers started rust browning as to be...

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I believe it is worthwhile to add this point: If we don't know for certain it was done then, we shouldn't do it when recreating arms of the era today. Possible doesn't mean probable, or even done at all. Until we have absolute proof, and not just a...
