    USS CONSTELATION (1854)

I was raised outside of Baltimore. When In grade scool, Pop took us to visit the Constellation. At that time she had been unmasted for whatever reason. As school kids, we saved our pennies and donated them to help remast her. I went back maybe twenty five years ago. She is a beauty!

    Italian reproduction metal quality

It wasn't only Walker cylinder that burst or bulged. The early 1860s were plagued with bursting cylinders. The ones that burst were the full fluted ones and Colts replaced them with the unfluted style. Not sure if it was an early "recall" but any returned to the factory were replaced. I...

    Middlesex Village Officers Fusil...

That looks a bit better than other reproductions I have seen and handled. And more reasonably priced. Okay, it was made somewhere else. Today it appears the center of the American Arms Industry is somewhere between Japan and Italy so I can't get all bunched up about that. Good buy on that...

    cowboy guns

Interesting comments Dan. I too have worn out wedges in 1860s. A couple of times. I believe Hickock was proficient, just don't believe that particular daily routine. I will pick up that book mentioned if I can find a copy, any idea if it is available online? Always looking too add to my...

    cowboy guns

So in the course of a year he would load and fire at least 4368 charges? While I too have read of this I believe it is more a product of the Buntline press.

Thoughts on Guns for the Working Man

I had forgotten all about the kits available until I read your reply. I was thinking about the italian replicas. Maybe not 100% authentic but not too bad. But the kit has some good potential and tuning a lock is not all that hard.

Thoughts on Guns for the Working Man

Dickert's a good style. Going back to your original post, another style you might consider would be the Harper's Ferry 1803 rifle. 54 caliber, halfstock, patchbox, a lot of good things going for it. I have one of the early Italian ones in 58 caliber and even with all the things the Italians...

1803 Harpers Ferry - RE Davis Replacemnt Lock

I still have the rifle and don't notice it having a overly hard trigger pull. If you are familiar with tools and the workings of a flintlock, you might try polishing the friction points of the lock and stoning the sear tip. Sometimes the angle of the tip can be adjusted for a better letoff...

1803 Harpers Ferry - RE Davis Replacemnt Lock

I also have the 58 caliber 1803. My second favorite rifle. Inletting the dutchman ahead of the frizzen is an easy fix and if it is noticable it goes with the I fixed it myself idea. So far my lock is doing what I expect from it but it is nice to know a replacement exists.

    stock wax

I have not used BC wax to finish so I can't answer about that specific product. I use Butchers Wax http://www.bwccompany.com/catalog-butchers.html and apply it over my stain and shellac. It gives a great hard finish to my stocks. Also works good over varnish which I sometimes use.

    Stock Shaper's Lament

Yep, hand saws are an option. I also use a drawknife, spokeshaves and handplanes to remove wood I feel needs to be on the floor and not on my rifle. A handplane helps me keep a good line and the shaves help me with radii. The drawknife is a quick way to remove wood.

    ASM 1862 Police

To me it looks like the barrel that used to come with the kits offered by CVA.
