    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

Russ, I don't know about the Brass Black. I used Perma-Blue to darken mine and was fairly happy with the results--A nice, deep, antiquey looking color. It also will come off with a dab of elbow grease and some 4-0 steel wool. Going out to the range sunday, weather permitting, and will stock...

    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

TG, If I were that pressed about getting a really pc piece, I'd save all the money I've sunk into fixing up a TC Hawken and put it towards all the pennies I'd be saving towards something like a ToTW or Hawken Shop kit. As it is, I just want something that's a bit less glaringly high-gloss...

    Heating a barrel

How hot a temperature can a ml barrel be exposed to without damaging the heat treatment to a dangerous degree? The reason I ask is that I have thought about lightly oiling the now-white barrel and heating it above my gas stove flame a bit to darken the metal as one cures an iron skillet, but I...

    Getting started building

Weeeeelll.... let's start slow. I'd say #1 to maybe #2. I have a reasonable bit of woodworking practice, but as said, don't have access to as much in the way of tools as I'd like to, and any machine shop stuff is right out.

    Getting started building

I've been bitten badly by the 'smithing bug during this refinishing project.... And apparently from what I see here there's no cure, only the palliative of building a new piece every so often. :: The trouble is i really don't have much of a shop ATM, and I'm curious what you all would consider...

    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

Okay, I've snapped a few Before pictures for frame of reference and started going to work. Here's what I've decided on at this point; Barrel--Strip down with naval jelly, lightly sand if necessary, and allow the in-the-white matte metal to age as it will under a light coat of grease. With...

CO2 Cartridges to Clear Barrel Obstructions

Try this. Around 19 bucks plus shipping, the cartridges themselves are at Wallyworld for 5 bucks a pack of several. Cabela's load discharger

    stuck ram rod

If you've got a shootin' buddy with one of those C02 load dischargers like Cabela's sells, use that to blow it out. Worked for me one time. And try using smaller patches from here on in, I know that was causing me stuck rods left and right.

    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

That's a thought too, though part of this exercise is to cut down on the reflectivity of the gun so it doesn't draw the attention of the critters that are destined for my stew. I guess if I wire-brushed the bare steel a bit to kind of matte the finish, it could be feasible...

    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

I may have to look up a local blacksmith if I decide to go all-iron, cuz I've not been able to find a patchbox either. Either that or rework the inlet in the stock, and that makes me nervous like a painted lady in church. The parts kit from October Country looks much like the one from the...

    De-modernizing the T/C Hawken

Well, I've reached the point where the shiny blue, brass, and glossy wooden stock of my TC rifle makes my hair stand on end... I'm no period correct nazi, but nonetheless, I'd like something that's a bit less "glow-in-the-dark" to game when hunting.... So I'm thinking about primitve-izing...

    Real black powder

WV, Where are you at in West-by-Gawd Verginny? I know Clark Bro's in Warrenton VA is selling Goex for $14.75/lb

    Real black powder

Also worthy of notice is the fact that the BP is actually a buck or so cheaper a pound for Goex vs Pyrodex, which I suspect is unusual. Everywhere I've looked has listed Pyrodex as being cheaper.

    Remington 1858 clone--Pietta vs. Uberti

Heh, I know everyone seemed to love the Uberti's, was curious if anyone thought the Pietta was its equal, or even in the same neighborhood qualitywise.

    Remington 1858 clone--Pietta vs. Uberti

I've seen both of these guns locally, and I LOVE the Remmy 1858 design. Sleek, smooth, strong, and accurate by all accounts. I can get my hands on a Pietta for $225, or an Uberti for $260. I've examined and handled both, and they both, to my untrained eye, look to be reasonably well made...

    Real black powder

Wow. Is it really that much more volatile than the modern substitutes, or is that just a bit of regulation that hasn't caught up to the Pyro, etc?

    Real black powder

I've been shooting my TC Hawken .45 with Pyrodex P thus far, and can't seem to get it to group for beans (though part of this is likely that I'm a dead poor shot with open sights due to lack of practice). I've seen it said that getting some real bp will often tighten up groups by a noticeable...

Ever feel like throwing your rifle in the drink?

Just what I need, a frippin' wiseguy.... Thanks for injecting a bit of humor

Ever feel like throwing your rifle in the drink?

Upon further examination of the snapped rod, it seems to have been some sort of synthetic shaft with brass tips. A thin, wood-grain look exterior with some kinda flexy, plasticky looking shtuff in the center. Always felt like I was ramming a ball with a noodle anyway, so good riddance--The...

Bought myself a Xmas present at the Gun Show

You have to go through all that to buy an ML gun down in Oz? :shocking::: :: :: :curse: That's a sad state of affairs. I picked up my first ml the same day, walked in, put my money down, and walked out. Didn't even show an ID. On the upside, I guess it'll make your piece that much more...
