    bullets for old army

Big Lube makes a bullet especially for the ROA. The mold can be had here or cast, sized and lubed here. I don't have an ROA so I haven't used it but have ordered bullets from them.

    dry fire with dead caps

I use aquarium airline tubing cut to about 1/4" in length for my Pietta NMA. Works great.

    Seating caps

I picked up an inline capper from the Possible Shop and just got some #10 Remington's from a local gun shop so I'll let you know how i like this combination in a bit.

before I go out and spend 60 bucks on caps...

I have only found #11 caps locally and they are too big got my brand new Pietta 1858 NMA. I want to order some #10 Remingtons but I've seen mixed reviewes on how they fit. So I have to order them mail order....how sure are you guys that they'll fit properly? Thanks

Do you completely strip your pistol for every cleaning?

I need to get a screwdriver set. Walmart has one they claim is for guns...anyone know if it's any good?

Do you completely strip your pistol for every cleaning?

Thanks for all the replies....they are varied. WD40, is it common to use WD40 as a drying lube and then re-oil with your favorite gun lube? How about oiling the action, which lube is best. oletymepreacher and a couple of others have mentioned brake cleaner....is that the best cleaner for...

Do you completely strip your pistol for every cleaning?

I already buggered two screws. I'm hoping the local gun shop will have replacements. I now have ground down drivers but the initial removal had two very stubborn screws. I am away almost every mon-fri so weekends aren't always my own. I can see a month going by without shooting and hence why...

Do you completely strip your pistol for every cleaning?

Hi all, I did a search but could not find this specific question answered. I've shot two days in a row, not a lot. 12 the first day and 18 the second day. After each shooting session I completely tore down my 1858 Pietta Remey and washed it in soapy water, rinsed super hot, dried, oiled and...

    what one

Ant67, I'm brand new to pistols and BP. I perused the message boards and settled on the Pietta 1858 Remington New Army from Cabela's which is currently on sale for $189+$5 shipping. The reason I decided on this as my first gun is because removing/changing the cylinder simple and because it...

    Seating caps

I couldn't find #10 caps....got about the last #11's around. Seems strange to me that they only have full stock during BP season....I wudda thunk people still shoot their BP guns the rest of the year especially in rural New Hampshire??

    Seating caps

Thanks. Currently I'm using pinched #11 caps for my Pietta 1858 and I can easily still push them on with my thumb....I don't need the dowel for added force or dexterity, I just thought it was considered safer to do it that way. I'm all for not using it if I don't need to.

Should I use BP if available?

Paul, in the last 12 months I've been on the road 42 weeks.....doesn't leave much time for my many, many hobbies :) But I have looked up a couple of local clubs (within 30 min drive) and one has a very nice pistol range. I will probably look into it. Thanks Bill

    Seating caps

Hi all, I was just reading an online article and they show the caps being placed on the nipple by hand but then seated using a dowel. Is this the proper method for performing this operation? Besides firing off the round, what kind of damage to your fingers has been reported from mishaps? Thanks

Should I use BP if available?

Paul, thanks. I guess it all depends on how much you use. I cant see myself buying a case of BP though I may someday join a shooting club which might offer a discount.

newbie need advise on load for a Cabela's 1858

Ok, just loaded and fired off 6 shots. I loaded 3 cylinders with 22 grains and 3 with 25 grains. I lost track of which were which and this complete newbie couldn't really tell the difference. I did hit my makeshift target all six times though two were kinda wild. I also hit a bullseye on the...

Should I use BP if available?

Paul, Thanks for the tip on the links and I usually do get most everything I buy via the internet...the UPS guy visits at least twice a week :) But in this case, I have two gun shops within a couple of miles of my house and a Walmart in between so my total travel was about 10 miles...much...

Is there a trick to installing the Pietta 1858 cylinder?

Thanks all. Tomorrow's the big day :)

Is there a trick to installing the Pietta 1858 cylinder?

Hi all, I can remove the cylinder just fine...Hammer in Half cock, pull pin and rotate the cylinder cw to remove. When installing it won't get past the lever that advances the cylinder when it is in the half cocked position so I have to release the hammer and draw it back a little and finagle...

Should I use BP if available?

I just came back from the local gun shop and got most of what I need but both shops and Walmart are mostly out of accessories cuz it's off season. Anyway, the old guy at the shop where I bought my stuff really wanted me to buy American Pioneer as he claims that it doesn't corrode like BP does...
