    Cleaning help!

A bit late to this party but let me second third and fourth Evaporust! It is absolutely freaking amazing stuff and will de-rust things that you would otherwise think impossible with minimal effort. With firearms I would suggest being cautious of any bluing though I personally haven't...

    Lyman GPR feedback

About 4 years ago I decided to take the plunge into black powder and after a lot of shopping around settled on the percussion GPR in .50. I had to do a few minor tweaks when the gun arrived (mostly getting the pins to seat right) but it was otherwise good to go out of the box. I did end up...

    broken escutcheon screw

Thanks for all the feedback, it looks like there's a general consenus on how to proceed. I'll try to track down some good replacement screws and then see how it goes -- and yes I will plan on replacing them all.

    Newbie GPR todo list

Thanks for the feedback. A range rod has definitely been added to my must purchase list, I can foresee ruining the one with the rifle pretty quickly. As far as what I'll get next I'm trying not to think about it. I figure I have more than enough to learn with what I have so we'll see how it...

    broken escutcheon screw

Thanks for the reply. I'm hesitant to dig into the wood in an attempt to create enough space to grab hold of the screw -- don't want to make a bad situation worse...but if it'll work maybe that's the best route to go. I also have access to a rather nice drill press. I was wondering if it...

    Newbie GPR todo list

No type-o, because I didn't have a powder measure on me I had to look up the weight ratio of black powder to Pyrodex RS so that I could measure out the equivalent charges. The scale + this chart http://www.curtrich.com/BPConversionSheet.htm helped me get what I needed.

    broken escutcheon screw

Just yesterday I was thinking to myself that those screws looked pretty flimsy and I should switch them out, unfortunately I didn't look any farther than the local hardware store which didn't have anything small enough. Sure enough, I torqued the top off of one last night :(. Of course after...

    Newbie GPR todo list

To Mykeal -- yeah, I figure on shooting it some more before really bothering to sight it in, and you're right about the patches. In my initial excitement I admit I didn't pay attention to them at all. As far as the powder, no I made sure I knew what I was doing before dropping any charges down...

    Newbie GPR todo list

So after dissembling, cleaning, mucking with the wedge pins to get them to fit better, and reassembling I finally got a chance to go shoot a muzzleloader for the first time. My goal was just to put some lead down range while I get used to the gun and let it break in. I ended up on a 25 yard...

    My New .54 GPR

Thanks for the tip, when I got home this evening I discovered that after removing them, removing the escutcheon's (by far the weirdest word I've learned during my foray into muzzleloaders), putting everything back together and then working the wedge pins in and out a few times everything fit...

    My New .54 GPR

I just received a new Lyman GPR in .50 but with the exact opposite issues :) The ramrod is extremely tight due to a retaining spring and the rear wedge pin won't even go all the way in and needs loosening.

    Newbie GPR todo list

Thanks for the feedback. I'll hopefully be using it as a deer rifle and for the most part that will be in central NC. So, a lot of woods, hills etc. and figure most everything would be well inside of 100 yards.

    Newbie GPR todo list

Thanks for the quick feedback everyone. I'm very used to iron sights so that shouldn't be a problem, and I will be taking Jethro224's advice on installing the the primitive rear sight (I had just assumed it was the one on the gun by default). Good head's up about the rod issues, that wasn't...

    Newbie GPR todo list

Greetings everyone, I'm in the midst of taking the plunge into black powder and should shortly have a new Lyman .50cal GPR in my hands. I'm initially interested in hunting and I figured for a first musket it would be a solid choice. I did a decent amount of research before purchasing and I...
