    Springfield rifled musket...

Tac, I know you inquired about the Springfield in particular, but being in England you have access to possibly the best rifled musket repros ever made. I speak of the original Parker-Hale Whitworth and Volunteer rifles.

    H&R Springfield Stalker

That's a great looking rifle. I wonder if it will take conicals like the other military 45"s.

    Parker Hale Volunteer Rifle

trueblueyankee, I've never had a problem with either of the 2 original series Parker-Hale muzzleloaders that I've owned.I have, however, read several negative posts online regarding Pedersoli rifles. These spoke of such things as badly finished wood and metal parts, badly finished bores...

    Parker Hale Volunteer Rifle

Nice find Barbarossa, I had to order my original series P-H Volunteer from a dealer in Ontario. I'm in British Columbia. Mine has Alexander Henry rifling. I love this rifle and last week it loved me back delivering a 5-shot 100 yard target showing 4 in the 10 ring (3 of which were in the X...

    nipple replacement frequency

Hello all, What I'm hoping for here is a consensus as to how many shots you can fire with your particular nipple before you notice accuracy deteriorating. It would, of course, depend on the construction material of the nipple, powder charge and bullet weight. Perhaps even the style of rifle...

    lubing a grease-grooved bullet

Hello All, My usual procedure for My P-H Volunteer rifle's gg bullets is to dip them up to the shoulders in melted lube, let them dry and run them through the resizing die. It works pretty well. I normally shoot 35-40 rounds in a session without any cleaning at all and, if I do my part, I'm...

    What is wrong with me?

Greg, I think you have to be honest with yourself. You need help. You are a muzzaholic.

    Rifled musket Range Report

Am I understanding this right? Are you shooting patched balls from a rifled musket?

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Medic, In answer to "Have I stretched my rifle's legs yet?" I plan to shoot at 100 yards and fiddle with the process until I feel quite confident at that distance then move out to the next target bank at 200 yards. This may or may not happen in this lifetime. Also, I'm pretty sure I'll one day...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Medic, Yes, I did a lot of research before buying the rifle. I'm normally a pretty impulsive person but the Volunteer was expensive so I wanted to be sure that ours would be a lasting relationship. As to why I want to change powders, I have read that Pyrodex has a high sulfur content that can...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Flash pan Dan, I've put a hundred rounds through my present nipple with very little wear. I bought 10 of these from Peter Dyson (gunsmith to the royal British family. I think that perhaps a lot of Whitworth/Volunteer shooters are shooting heavy loads for long distance target shooting (the...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Papabang, That seems to be the ticket. I'm going to give the Triple 7 a try. I've read that its sulfur free and is better for the bore than Pyrodex which has a high sulfur content. I've read also that most shooters find T-7 to be more accurate.

medic, I forgot. You asked about the load. I use 70 grains Pyrodex RS

    triple 7 in rifled musket

When I first got this rifle I did a lot of research on the various online forums (long range muzzleloader/research press in particular) and was perplexed by the number of different approaches taken to load my type of rifle. So I tried most of them; lubed wad, felt wad , card wad, swab after each...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Medic, Actually,I am aware of the Volunteer's target lineage. I sought one out because of its accuracy potential. The seller thought it was a Whitworth. I was delighted to discover its true identity and its 100% "built in Birmingham". The Volunteer has Alexander Henry rifling which shoots...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

I understand the appeal of real black, but I live in a Pacific coastal town in British Columbia Canada and all I seem to be able to aquire here is Pyrodex or Triple 7. Here's another question; If, as suggested, I reduce the T-7 charge by 15% will the resulting internal pressure be roughly equal...

    triple 7 in rifled musket

Hello all, I was wondering about using Hogdon's 777 bp substitute in my .451 Parker-Hale Volunteer rifle. Has anyone done this sort of thing and were there any ignition issues? I've read that 777 is designed to ignite with 209 primers only but I'd be surprised if a top-hat musket cap failed to...

    Newbie with serious issue

Piotr, If you do go the explosive exit route you must be sure that the bullet is seated firmly against the powder charge. If it is not you run the risk of ruining your barrel with a bulge or, if the charge is too large, turning your gun into a pipe bomb. I don't understand how your bullet got...
