Bad point of aim is it the crown?

To close this, we ended up clocking the barrel to fix it. We tried bending it using a laser level stuck to the barrel flat pointed at a target across the yard with my barrel clamped to a bridgeport table. We used hold down clamps to put some bend into it but every time we let up, the laser...

How to you figure right ball size and patch thickness?

A while back uncle built me a .62 underhammer. I bought a lee .600 rb mould. Uncle thought it too small so I recently purchased a Lyman .610 rb mold that drops .612 . Obviously this is going to require a change in patch thickness. Is there a lower limit on how thin a patch to use? Thanks...

Bad point of aim is it the crown?

Uncle made me a .62 underhammer last year. The front sight is at one side of barrel flat the rear at the opposite side of flat to get it to shoot straight. Barrel looked straight when we got it. I'm thinking the crown might have issues and I have a lathe. Is a 45 degree angle okay for a...

    expected velocity

Uncle (Eph289) built himself another underhammer with a lock he made himself and walnut stock he sawed out of a tree. He built the band mill that sawed it. As soon as his kids are back in school, I'll get to shoot the .62 he built for me with him as his .40 sips powder and lead  I'll...

    OS Cards - Lessons Learned

Not the first or the last to forget something needed when headed to the range or hunting. Tees you off though. Might as well roll with it. You will do it again. Clutch

Naval Jelly in a rusted bore?

I'd try shooting it first and cleaning it good a few times. Then if the pits are bothering you a bunch, a lead lap to clean it up, followed by shooting it again. Clutch

    Honing after cut rifling ??

Are you sure he is using a hone which is a rotary tool instead of a cast lead lap that is a linear tool when used in a rifled barrel? Clutch

    Brass range rod

I like a metal rod for the range. I use my nylon coated dewey cleaning rod with a homemade tip. If I didn't have it, I'd likely make one out of brass rod. Clutch

    New "high end" underhammers

When you figure time and parts, that seems almost low end to me if we are talking handcrafted vs mass produced. No insult intended to builder. Clutch

    casting bullets

Were you using pure lead? I usually get colors and dross when casting Lead/Antimony/Tin mixes that are more centerfire than muzzleloading. Clutch

    beeswax

It would seem to be a good natural rust preventative. I wipe the barrel of my in-the-white .58 with a mix of BLO-Turpintine-Beeswax that I normally use for prettyfying stocks on old military rifles. Clutch

    anyone shooting authentic arms?

I've aways read warnings about shooting old damascus barreled arms. How do you make sure that your guns are safe to shoot? It would seem that black powder would work its way into any flaws in the barrel and start eating the welds away. Clutch

    source of sabots?

I believe there is a sabot system still sold by Thomson Center that uses a .429 dia bullet. The sabot is in two halves with a felt doughut that holds things together at base. The few times I shot those, I used a 255G SWC cast out of wheel weights. A chunk of cast lead will get it done if...
