    Bore Seasoning

Some of the guys at the range talk about seasoning a muzzleloader's bore. They say that's what happens if you use a 'natural' product like bore butter as a lubricant. They also say it's possible to remove the seasoning, which they say you shouldn't do. My question is this - is there such a thing...

Ballistol - What is it and does it work?

Kind of takes the fun out of it...

    pyrodex in flinter

I've heard two opinions on this. Some folks say never use duplex loads, for safety reasons. Others say it can be done as long as you use just enough BP - 4 or 5 gr - to ignite the Pyrodex. I believe some manufacturers recommend this if you're going to use Pyrodex in their flinters. So I guess...

    velocity comparison

All else being equal (like same twist, length of barrel, same percussion caps, etc.), I'd say that a .50 cal patched roundball pushed by 90 gr of FFFg will attain a higher muzzle velocity (perhaps as much as 200 ft/sec more) than a .54 cal patched roundball. :m2c:

    Austin& Halleck

I have the .50 cal Lyman Great Plains Hunter in a caplock, and it's a great shooter. But it can't hold a candle to the A&H Mountain Rifle either in looks, or, from what I've been told, accuracy. Strange. ::

    Casting Lubricant

What, if anything, do you use to lubricate your ML projectile molds?

    Cross-Border Flinlocks

Right. It's no big deal. They're not even asking for visas.

Glass bedding the Great Plains Riffle.

Noticed the same thing with my Great PLains Hunter. Settled in nicely after the first few times I had the barrel out. It's a stock thing. :relax:

    *%#@%%#@*** !!!

Hmmmm. The only time I had burned out patches was when I spit patched. Figured there was something incendiary about my saliva. :haha:

    Peep Sight

I've seen your name in the literature the 900-yard shooters pass on to me occasionally at my range (they're trying to interest me in long-range shooting). You're well known here. I detect a bit of skepticism about my offhand groups at 100 yards. Well, I don't blame you. I had trouble believing...

    TOUCH HOLE LINERS

If you're shooting alot, it's probably a good idea to replace the touchhole liner once a year. Same goes for caplock nipples and in-line breech plugs. :m2c:

    Peep Sight

It took me a long time to find the right powder/projectile combination for my Great Plains Hunter. I was all over the place with projectiles like the T/C Maxi, the heavier Buffalo and Lyman bullets, the lighter PA bullet from Hornady, etc. I figured I had a real dud on my hands. Then I tried the...

    It's a real struggle

Try choke tube lube. Traditions makes a choke tube/nipple lube that works real well. I use it on the nipples on my caplocks, the breech plugs on my in-lines, and the vent liner on my flinter. Never had any of them seize.

    Peep Sight

Well, good news. I put a Lyman receiver sight (57GPR) on my .50 cal Great Plains Hunter (1-in-32 twist) a couple of weeks ago and finally got to shoot the rifle this afternoon. Wow! The best I could do offhand using the buckhorn sights was 4 or 5 inch groups at 100 yards. Once I got the...

    Holes in patches?

Pillow ticking is good patch material. I've heard that Irish linen is even better.

    Poor warm weather accuracy

Are you cleaning between shots? Or only after every 3-4 shot group? I seem to do better cleaning between shots in the summer. :results:

    Rate of Twist

Let's not forget the famed Whitworth, in which 70 gr of no. 6 powder (similar, I think, to FFFg) propelled a 575 gr hexagonal projectile accurately over hundreds of yards to its target. One of the Whitworth's most illustrious victims was Union Army General Sedgwick. It was Sedgwick who, while...
