My first flintlock, and shes a beauty!

HI ALL, someone asked for a range report a while back and I finally got around to putting one together. As you can see from the photo I need to adjust the sights a little, but the gun shoots like a dream. Recoil is negligible on that .45, balance is right on, lock throws lots of spark, and I...

    Making charcloth...

Rather than use cloth, I prefer to char 100% cotton lamp wick. Its available at my local hardware, and is much thicker than normal cloth. A peice 3/4 x 3/4 will hold a spark for a good long while.

    anybody else eat deer heart?

As the founder of this thread, I am very amused at the direction it has taken. Seems a bit like Frankensteins monster!

Hey guys, just thought I would share some pics f a new pistol that just arrived in the mail...It all started with a rifle I bought on gunbroker.com. (see the thread "my first flintlock and shes a beauty) After receiving the rifle, I was contacted by the seller and he asked if I would be...

    anybody else eat deer heart?

Just curious to see if anybody enjoys eating deer heart like I do. I was taught as a young man that God gave that animal life, and you took it away. So as a tribute to God and the animal, everyone in camp eats a piece of the heart on the day it was killed. If its not damaged by the shot, I...

interest in a SE Michigan day at the range?

Hi all, just seeing if I could drum up any interest in a group shoot at a range this fall or winter. I live near Flint and there are a few ranges near by, but I would be willing to drive a little ways to meet some other local members. We can do traditional outfits or not, just throwing the idea...

    mountain man books

just finished Wolves Against the Moon, and loved it. Deals mostly with the Michigan/Indiana territory, but includes some Canada and New Orleans discussion. Its historical fiction, but as far as I can tell its extremely accurate as far as dates, locations, and people. Definately worth a read.

My first flintlock, and shes a beauty!

THANKS EVERYONE! Its nice to know that I wasnt swindled. Im very wary of buying anything on this googe box, let alone dropping that kind of money on a gun Ive never touched. Still havent been to the range because all my local powder suppliers are out of stock. But someone asked about the...

My first flintlock, and shes a beauty!

hey guys, Im still new to the forum, and just picked up my first flintlock. Ive been using a Traditions Pennsylvania Hunter (for sale in classified section of the forum), but decided I was ready to take the flint plunge. I paid 750 bucks in an online auction, and although I havent shot it yet...

    Making a knife??

Tin star, you asked the question after seeing the pictures of a couple knives I made on another post, and Im finally getting around to answering. Ill start off by saying that if you are using a smaller file, and if your knife design doesnt call for a lot of contour, you could just put it on the...

homemade gear from a new member

This is my primitive fire kit. It started off as a shoulder bag I got for free. I cut the strap off to make belt loops, then added the antler button and thong to hold it shut. Pretty simple, but effective. I make/store my charcloth in an altoid tin, and keep the rest of the kit in the round...

homemade gear from a new member

This was one of my first projects that I worked up so I could enjoy a pipe while out looking for shed antlers in the spring time. The Altoid tin keeps my tobacco fresh for several days. The antler tip keeper doubles as a pipe pick and tamper.

homemade gear from a new member

I know this isn't muzzleloader related, but figured a little leeway would be granted here in the "craftsman" section of the forum. This is a quiver that I designed to compliment the curves of my Bear bow. Its made from deer hides that were tanned by my uncle. The knife is an old "western" that...
