    Now full bore into Muzzleloading

A follow up on my new Lyman Hawken GPR. After measuring the bore, I determined the patch thickness of .020 and the .490 ball would be a good start. Loaded up a light 35 gr 3f Goex and my home made patch. Fired off several rounds at about 20 yrds . The factory setting of rear sight windage was...

    Now full bore into Muzzleloading

cowboys. Mine is a .50 cal 1-60 twist for round ball. I have a .490 mold to cast my own bullets. After reading every word of the instructions are very detailed about cleaning before firing. Thanks for the tip on patches and gr loads. Going out today looking for patch material. I'm looking...

    Now full bore into Muzzleloading

Been awhile. I have been shooting BP revolvers for several years, and never reached out for a long gun.....that is till now. After reviewing a lot of types and brands to fit into my desire and budget, the Hawken type Great Plains by Lyman came in first. Just got a new one yesterday and glade ...

    Original Colt 1851 navy!!!

Nice to see the real thing. I noticed an item that raises a question. The barrel wedge has a rounded notch that appears to clear the ,what I always thought was a retaining screw. All my replicas don't have the notch. My guess is makes it easier to remove the wedge. Come to think of it now the...

    Unobtainium percussion caps

Just checked with them, Hazmat fee is $42 plus shipping also Gander Mountain wants $100 Hazmat. Too much for me :headslap: I'll wait for local shops and just see what happens. Looks like back to brass cartridge shooting for a awhile. :hmm:

    Unobtainium percussion caps

I had a guy suggest I make my own from beer cans and toy pistol caps. Prefer to buy my own , but none to be around ???? :idunno: My stock is just about depleted.

    Cylinder loading stand

AAAAH you came to a different conclusion :haha: I'm keeping it on order, already paid shipping and Cabela's don't charge that again. What I intend to do is build one out of parts pile in my little shop. I think there is a screw driver there too. My bigger problem is finding #10 percussion caps...

    Cylinder loading stand

I like my 1858 Remington so well,I plan on getting another and use the pair in Cowboy Action Shooting. I did buy an extra cylinder so as to have rounds ready faster. Also looking at an off gun cylinder loading stand. Anyone have ideas about homemade stand or ??? How effective are they rather...

    .454 vs .451 balls

Good explanation, so were do the .451 come into play ?

    Wax Wads?

I have never used wads, but started off using Crisco and worked well as a lubricant all over the front of the cylinder :haha: Then went to cigaret paper cartridge and no grease , used only .454 balls that seals the load ,leaving the nice little lead ring as an indicator. Works for me.

    .454 vs .451 balls

Along with a myriad amount of conversation regarding percussion cap sizes,I find ball size is also a great topic. So I shoot replica .44 calibers using .454 round balls that leave the nice little ring of lead denoting a good seal . Those little buggers sail out of the muzzle end just fine...

Slix Shot nipples and a Wolff reduced power main spring in an 185

Called Track of the Wolf , and was told by the tech that all Italian guns nipples are different size and they (ToTW)make nipples specifically for Italian guns shooting with #11 caps he mentioned trying #10 first. Seems odd to me that Italians can't make more specific replicas. :td:

Slix Shot nipples and a Wolff reduced power main spring in an 185

Good info. Have you used vented nipples on other revolvers of larger calibers, with similar results ? I shoot .44s with about 24 grains and CCI #11 caps that are always, what I thought, being blown off. You use #10s in most if not all your videos that stay on the nipples. Will #11 stay put with...

    Help identify maker.

Someday it will be totally disassembled and cleaned. Then will consider the rust removal and shoot after a new wedge of course. 36 caliber will be fun, all other revolvers I have are .44

    Help identify maker.

The wedge is in poor shape looks as though someone chewed the spring catch end off. So a new one is for looks. There is some rust inside the barrel so I will not being firing it.

    Help identify maker.

It appears my gun was made in 1978 for Navy Arms by Uberti. Unfortunately there is some rust in the barrel and a some spots on the frame, the wedge needs to replaced at least for looks, I will search for a replacement maybe Dixie Gun Works ? I won't be firing the gun, but will be a nice...
