    Waterproofing canvas

Just as a point of information it appears that Canvak does indeed make canvas flammable. So i guess it's a case of pick yer poison when it comes to waterproofing Kevin :hatsoff:

    Waterproofing canvas

Thanks for the heads up about Thompsons and flammability. Do you know if the Canvak sold by Cabelas is flammable also? Thanks Kevin

    Over Shot Card

Java Man, I would agree with the idea that it's the fiber wad causing the problem. I tried all different setups, cups, paper shells, on and on. The only time the problem of holes in the pattern stopped was after removing the fiber wad from the load. FWIW using oatmeal as a buffer between the...

    Flint is hitting too high

I was testing my new Bess lock with the proper sized flints and discovered that the flint is striking too high on the frizzen. As a result I'm not getting too many sparks in the pan. I'm sure the frizzen is hard enough as I've tested with smaller flints and gotten a good shower of sparks. Any...

    Sears and tumblers

Der Fett, This set of castings came from the Track of the Wolf I don't know if they get the castings from Rifle shoppe or not. Regardless, both pieces are cast. As I was doing final fit on the sear, I broke a small piece off the tip that's why i figured they needed to be drawn back. Thanks for...

    Sears and tumblers

As I finished my Bess lock, it occurs to me that after case hardening the tumbler and sear, Perhaps I should temper them also? I should have realized this before, not real smart :youcrazy: eh? My question is how far back should I draw them? Should they be tempered like the springs were? Any...

    Flash in the pan

I switched to using 3f as a prime about a year ago in both my flints. I'm very happy with the results. Is 4f faster? Probably. Does it make that much of a difference? I doubt it. When I'm hunting with my smoothbore I find it much easier to prime from my horn rather than looking for a priming...

    Question for the lock builders

Thanks guys, I really don't want to make the lock plate shine like a Pedersoli. But I think there is a bit of cleanup left for me to do.

    Question for the lock builders

After a long period of dragging my feet, I have finished assembling a set of Brown Bess castings from TOW. The best part is.... it works! Sparks really nicely. Ok. What do you all recommend for the final finish on the plate, cock, etc. ?? This is my first try with this, so I'm open to any and...

    Ballistol for Patch Lube?

I use ballistol 3-1 with water, in my rifle and my smoothbore. i swear by the stuff. Damp patches only. I like the idea of letting it dry, I'd be curious to see how that works. :hmm: Kevin

    20 guage load question

Pilgrim, Here's what I use in my 20 ga. fowler. .600 rb, pillow tick patch, lubed with ballistol/water. If I'm shooting a trailwalk I use 75 gr. 3f. Any targets under 35 yards and I cut the charge to 50gr. At 50 yards with this load, and!! as long as there is no cranial flatulence on my part...

    Paper Shot Cartridges

Try using oatmeal as a buffer. When I use shot tubes in my 62 it's powder, card wad, oatmeal, roughly as much as the shot then another card, shot and card. 80 gr. 3f or 2f and I get really tight patterns at 30 yards. If I can find any patterning targets I'll try to post. Kevin

Babtizmal and a walk in the woods

The first critter I ever shot with my smoothbore, or any bp gun for that matter was a squirrel. It never gets tired. I could spend the rest of my hunting time doing it. Great pictures, Hope you are well. :hatsoff: Kevin

    Bullet block

I've used maple for my blocks. Home Depot sells iot in all widths for any size block. I like the maple because after staining and some oil it just looks nice.

    paper cart and ball size?

Don't get discouraged by the idea that you will lose accuray using a paper cart. Yes there will be some loss, but that's to be expected. The thing is, work on the load. Try different powder charges try using lube or not, etc. My gun has a .620 bore, I use a .600 rb and a lightweight paper. The...

    Teflon shooting patches

I'm just wondering what auto parts store you found the spray in? I tried AID Auto Barn Auto Zone and three or four small independents and came up with zilch. The only thing I found was Zep 45 with teflon. Just curious. :hmm: Thanks, Kevin
