I am using a 12 ga for this. A friend gave me some 16 gauge cushion wads I use. The wax on the outside helps to lube the barrel so that fouling stays soft and can be removed easily. More important, the wax seals the bottom of the wad under the cushion wad, so I don't have to worry about anything coming apart when I put the shot in the paper wad while it is in the top of the barrel.

I also figure 35 will be max, just need some ideas on how to even, or tighten the pattern up some. :hmm:

Either add more shot or reduce the powder will tighten up a pattern to an extent...

Have you tried using coin rolls as shot cups yet? :hmm:

Penny rolls for 12 guage, dime rolls for 20 guage, you may have to perferate the sides with a pin to get them to open while in flight...

I shot a couple of nickel rolls today. I bought some of the pre-formed at the dollar store. These are not glued, just rolled on a angle. They blow apart very nicely!

I may have a thirty yard gun yet! :applause:

I was using #6 copper plated shot, I will try some hard 7.1/2s.

Thanks for the suggestion, It Works! :hatsoff:

Dirty Barrel

Maybe the coin wrapper likes my lubed wad? :hmm:

That bottom target has a great pattern in the kill zone, well done...

Another plus for the coin wrappers, they stack nice in your hunting pouch...

a 3 to 4 ratio looks very good.

I have found that 1 and 1/2 times more shot to powder seems to work very well in flint guns.

I shoot 70 gr FFG, one .135 over shot card wad, and 110 gr equivalent of #5 shot, topped off with an 1/8 inch thick slice of felt wad, over shot.

The slice of felt wad holds the shot in place much better than the thin cardboard over shot wads when traipsing up and down these Ozark hills. Not to mention that the felt over shot wad appears to break up on firing, contributing to a consistent pattern.

I haven't tried the shot cups, but they should work well too. I wonder how well Penny wraps will fit an 11 ga? Gotta try that.

JD,
I am using a 75 to 110 x 2 and it works very well. I may try a little less shot, now that I am getting some decent patters with the coin wrappers.

I am also going to try the felt in place of the card wad in the wrapper.

Try using oatmeal as a buffer. When I use shot tubes in my 62 it's powder, card wad, oatmeal, roughly as much as the shot then another card, shot and card. 80 gr. 3f or 2f and I get really tight patterns at 30 yards.
If I can find any patterning targets I'll try to post.

Gives a all new meaning to the term: "It's not just for breakfast any more" :rotf:

I am will try some buffering also!

Thanks for all the information on paper shot cartridges. I'm new to smoothbore shooting, I happened to get a very good deal on a partially built Northwest trade gun kit which I finnished. I have been shooting round balls and last weekend fired some shot and got ok patterns at 25 yds. I now have some experemnting to do thanks to all of you. I find the smoothbore to be fantasticly intersting.

I tried a load with Cream of wheat as a buffer. :youcrazy:

Only four pellets hit the paper target at 25yds. :hmm:

Oat meal is next!

Cornmeal can also be used as a buffer... :hmm:

I just went and read 15 pages of "jug Choke" and saved some of the info..........looks like i need to try over shot wads again..........for over the powder and also cut out some foam over the shot cards, with these coin wrappers. I now perferate them full of holes........had one not split apart.....nearly took the head off the turkey target! :rotf:

Coin wrappers, not just for money any more...

I must say, you are running them through the paces to get the best patters, thanks for the timely updates as well...
