    charcoal and braziers

Howdy, You know, it would be nice if the people that make the PC comments could just read and not judge a person trying to make positive comments. This forum is a great tool, but those kind of comments are unwarrented and they make people turn away. :nono: Charcoal is great to use in the...

    gobblers knob or fort fredrick

Howdy, I spoke to the Booshway, Gary, And he stated the same story about the open fires. Ft. Freddy may be in the same boat. Someone might want to give Steve Robertson a call @ Ft. Freddy and report here about the fire situation.

    gobblers knob or fort fredrick

Howdy, Ft. Frederick has a lot of Sutlers signed up according to the Web-Site. They have, for the last 2 years, not had the camper volume they used to have due to time period limitations. According to the GNAR site they do not have the Sutler numbers, but the ones they do have are good-ins...

    Lodges/tents

Howdy, You are right about the info. in the Laubin book being a little sketchy, but I do not know of any other books right off hand. That would be a good project for you, Tipis. I have visited your website and find it informative and interesting. You ought to write a book. :hatsoff:

    Lodges/tents

Howdy, A good book to get a copy of and read is " The Indian Tipi" By Laubin. It gives a good load of information concerning Lodges, set-ups, rules of conduct inside and out, as well as a good set of instructions for making your own. Good Luck!! :hatsoff:

    Eastern Primitive Rendezvous

Howdy, Right you are! It is one of, if not the finest, sites The Eastern goes to. It beats Doddridge Co. site by a mile. If you want a good experience at a big event, this is it. We will be there most of the week. :hatsoff:

    1800-1840 wedge tent

Howdy, Tentsmith has a museum wedge tent with a bell that is a good size for a family. Be sure to get the fly for the tent. They can be ordered with or without the sod cloth. I would not own a tent without the sod cloth due to weather concerns. Tentsmith also sells a ground cloth that will...

    cleaning cast iron

Howdy, When we use cast iron, we go thru the same routine at home or camping. First scrape any leftovers from the pan, griddle, or dutch over. If the iron is a real mess with gravy or what ever, we will pour hot water into the iron and place it on the fire to simmer, then dump it out. We then...

    Camp Cooking-looking for ideas

Howdy, Here is a good 18th century recipe: Take 2 lbs venison or beef cubed in approx. 1" cubes, roll them in salt/peppered flour and brown in lard or oil in a 12" dutch oven. Take the meat out of the oven and set aside. Thick slice 3 or 4 granny smith apples or any good cooking apple and...

    knife accumulation

Howdy, Don and Carol are good people. I have not seen them since the Market Faire at Fort Loudoun last year. As far as The Patuxents, we are having our 2 main camps on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends like the old days only instead of Meyersdale and Davissonville we camp near Sheperdstown...

    knife accumulation

Howdy, Speedy and Jason are still into the camping and competition. Speedy is still making bags and Jason is building rifles. We were camped at Shepardstown, WV on a brother Patuxent's land over Memorial Day weekend. I guess the next get-together will be at Dixon's the end of next month for...

    knife accumulation

Howdy, Collection looks good. I spoke to Speedy on Friday, June 3rd, and told him about seeing your knives, sheaths and the Thurmon Donavan knife. He was glad to hear the sheaths were still in use. I was not living in this area when Thurman was alive, but I knew who he was and have heard...

N-SSA Spring Nationals Wednesday through Sunday

Howdy, My wife and I were at the event on Friday afternoon and talkin to friends who were shooting "Henrys". They shoot with the 9th Va. They were shooting just to the left of the tower. I also had wanted to see the mortar competition and it was wild to hear the boom and watch the lazy flight...

Trying to make parched corn, failing miserably

Howdy, I was not trying to say it was wrong to use oil, it is just that I have not used it. As a matter of fact, I plan on giving it a try. I did flavor some with a small amount of bacon grease once after the corn was cooked. :sorry:

Trying to make parched corn, failing miserably

Howdy, I also use the cast iron, but I don't use the oil to parch my corn. I find it works just as well. The kernels will swell and turn golden, then a brown. I season with salt, etc. once the corn is removed fron the heat to prevent the seasoning scorching and giving a burnt taste. :m2c:

Tent poles for period style tents?

Howdy, We use the sleeve idea on our wall tent ridge pole. That way you do not have to worry about loosing the nuts and bolts. If you decide on this route, be sure to allow for the wood to swell on the ends that slide into the sleeve, because even if painted or stained thw wood my swell in...

How do you get everything to the events?

Howdy, We pull a 6' X 10' Pace enclosed trailer with a Ford F-150 extended cab 4-wheel drive that has a truck cap. In the trailer we carry enough poles, stakes, ropes and and canvas to set up 2 wall tents and flys, a one-pole. and a 11' X 17' marquee at the same time. We do not do this of...
