    Fire Lapping Smoothbore

What grit sandpaper do you start with and is there any risk of "over sanding"? Or is the grit so fine it's not an issue?

    Fire Lapping Smoothbore

This post is a sort of addition to my previous post about my smoothbore loading hard. A few suggested polishing the bore with a suggestion how to do it. That got me to thinking. I bought a Neco fire lapping kit a couple of years ago for a rifle I had but never considered using it on my...

    Loading Hard

Thanks AZ. Please let me know how the .595 ball works out. What size patch do you plan to use? Also, I guess I might not understand how you guys are using the Moose Milk. Do you use it as a patch lube or are you using it to swab the barrel? If as a patch lube how wet is it when you use it? If...

    Loading Hard

Thanks Musketman. I know the 3F doesn't make sense, that's why I tried it because I was told it would burn cleaner. I'll give the recipe a try, though I've used something similar and that does work as a swab between shots. However, I read about people who are able to shoot multiple times without...

    Loading Hard

70 grains of 2F. I even tried 3F and the fouling seemed even worse.

    Loading Hard

Dilly, I have not tried Stumpy's Moose milk, in fact I'm not even sure what it is.

    Loading Hard

I have a .62 cal smoothbore that after shooting a round or two is just flat out hard to load without swabbing barrel etc. That's not a whole lot of fun when you are out to shoot and not clean. I've been using .600 cal rb and .015 precut/lubed patches. I have used thinner patches with same...

    simple green as bore cleaner

I assume this won't hurt a "seasoned" barrel like a traditional bore cleaner (Hoppes, Bullseye, etc.) would? If not...I'm gettin' me some. :redthumb:

    Burnishing

Thanks to all of you for the excellant advice. I think I'll pass on this stock and practice before my next one. Too far along to mess up now! I'll let you know how I make out if and when I try it. Sounds like it might be a good technique for some small furniture projects as well. :hmm:

    Burnishing

I just read in the post "Sandpaper" about burnishing. It sounds pretty straightforward, but how much pressure do you use when you burnish? Do you just lightly rub the stock until the desired affect is acheived or do you really have to put some elbow grease into it and rub hard? Also, do you run...

Laurel Mt Forge Permawax vs. Permaseal?

Can anyone tell me if it's OK to just use the LMF Permawax inplace of the Permaseal? or is there anything I can/should use such as tung/danish oil if I don't have Permaseal before using the Permawax? Thanks.

    White Blue or Brown?

Thanks Musketman, will do. I'm just waiting for my stain to arrive in the mail to finish the stock. As soon as it's done I'll give it the ol' college try or send you the pics. Thanks.

    White Blue or Brown?

Thanks tg, I didn't do the rinse but will. Java Man as soon as I'm finished I'll be sure to post a picture, if I can figure out how to do it.

    White Blue or Brown?

Tg and Rat- thanks! I took both of your advice and used the Naval Jelly followed with 0000 steel wool and the results are fantastic! Just what I was looking for. Thanks again. :thanks:

    White Blue or Brown?

Swank. I guess it all depends on how much experience and patience you have. I suppose like everything else, the more you do the easier it gets. I am what I would consider a better than average woodworker but the kit is pretty labor intensive and tricky in spots. I had a particularly hard time...

    White Blue or Brown?

This is a two part question. First, I have a Caywood Wilson Chiefs Trade Gun that is supposed to be a replica of a 1740 trade gun. I built it myself from a kit and Caywood told me that according to their research the originals were blued. However, some research I've done since as well as some...

    Slug for lapping

You might also check into the NECO lapping system. I read about it a few years ago in a popular muzzleloading magazine. It's kinda expensive and labor intensive but according to the article it did wonders for the rifles accuracy, velocity and fouling. :results: :m2c:

    Where to buy slings

Thanks Stumpkiller, that's a great idea. That way the strap isn't catching on branches while hunting. Thanks to everyone for the help.

    Where to buy slings

Where could I purchase a PC sling for a Wilson Chiefs Trade Gun (c. 1740)? I've looked on Track of the Wolf but they don't have any. Thanks.

    Stock Stain Color?

TANSTAAFL that's a beautiful gun. That is exactly the color I'm looking for but alas I don't have several months to "cook up the brew", but I will definitely keep the recipe in mind the next time. And Herb, I did see that post and saw the color of your picture. That too is a color I'm looking...
