I was helping at a Izzak Walton Youth Day today our club does the blackpowder shoot for kids . The one guy who has been doing this for awhile had a bottle of Simple Green their and we were using it to clean the rifles up seemed to work well has anyone here tried it ?

The NMLRA people are pretty enthused about using that as a cleaner. I used it for their training with pretty good results, but I use simple clear (water) instead. Water right out of the tap works pretty well. A dab of Dawn detergent doesn't hurt as long as you get that out with the simple clear.

I would be MOST cautious with the Simple Green to clean a rifle. And if I used it it would be like a tablespoon of it to a gallon of water.
One time I was spraying some Simple Green on some greasy parts before pressure washing them & the wind blew & blew a mist of the Simple Green on my truck & about 2 weeks later the paint started coming off where it got the detergent on it. Think what it may do to a finish of a rifle.

Now if ya put a lil squirt in a gallon of water, like ya would Dawn detergent it may work OK & not be harmfull. But it IS some potent stuff so don't have any straight residue of it on your hands as if it will eat into a finish of a truck, it will eat into a finish on a gun......

I've been using a 50/50 mix of Simple Green & water for over 3 years. It does a nice job of cleaning and has cause NO trouble to any part of a gun whatsoever. :front:

Birddog your truck must be a Chevy  :: couldnt help myself. Anyhow I used this to do some degreasing of some old military rifles and never had any adverse effects never thought to use it on my flintlocks, maybe I'll cut with some water to be on the safe side .

I've seen it used by several people as patch lube and bore cleaner, but only a very small quantity was used. I have tried it and it shows a LOT of promise. I like the smell and the colour! Don't know if it is too strong for various gun finishes.

One of my friends that uses the stuff exclusively is a chemical engineer... if that means anything...

(AND he's a VERY GOOD engineer too!!!)

Oh ........ does Chevy make a real truck ?

No, this is a Ford, not an imitation truck.....

I will have to try some of the Simple Green next time I clean & see if it shows any difference in cleaning. A ounce or so in a gallon of water should not hurt anything. I usually use a couple ounces of Ballistol or Joy in my flushing solution but will give the Green a try. I know it is some pretty stout stuff ! Really wake ya up if you get some of it in a cut !

ford is a alright truck for old women and youg punks. but chevy is a mans truck  just kidding drive what you like me myself i'd rather push a chevy than drive a ford. b.s. id drive a ox team before i walk

From the manufacturer...

Simple Green is a blend of water, surfactant (surface-active) agents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, color and scent. Surfactant agents lift grease and oil up off of the surface, wetting agents help Simple Green penetrate soils, and emulsifiers put those soils into solution so that they can be washed away.

Simple Green is non-toxic. Therefore, the listing of ingredients on the label is not required by law. Simple Green's unique formula is protected under the US Trade Secrecy Act and has been extensively tested to verify the product's credentials. Simple Green complies with all current labeling requirements for ingredient disclosure on cleaning products. If you have an allergy, medical reason, or technical reason for wanting to know if Simple Green contains a particular item, please contact us at 800/228-0709 and we will help you as best we can.

Guys,
I have used SG plus water for about 5 years. I cut it 1 part SG to 8 parts water. It works great as a cleaner or as a patch lube at a match. I dont use it as a lube while hunting and it will take off some finishes if you use it to strong.

Simple Clear is as good as it gets--- (verry-verry -verry hot) and you can't beat the price. :agree: :m2c:

I wash fired, black powder cartridge cases with vinegar followed by Simple Green and water - leaves them clean as the day they left the factory.

Simple Green is like WD40 - it has a thousand uses. I put a pint in my 250 gallon sprayer when I use herbicide - makes the spray stick to the leaves a little better. It also works well in your auto windshield wiper water under the hood to cut road grime. I keep a gallon around the house all the time.

I have been using simple green for patch lube and for cleaning for quite a while with excellent results. When we run a youth field day our rifles see at least 100 shots each with minimal cleaning. We only have five min between groups of youngsters. We normally have 100 kids and each fire at least 4 or 5 shots. Using S-G for lube and in between cleaning. We have very minimal trouble despite the amount of shots fired. This has been our lube of choice for at least the last three youth events. Plus my own monthly club shooting. Never had any finish removal problems though I don't use linseed oil for stock finish too many things will attack it for my taste. :imo:

I assume this won't hurt a "seasoned" barrel like a traditional bore cleaner (Hoppes, Bullseye, etc.) would? If not...I'm gettin' me some. :redthumb:

I'm not sure...I bet it woun't since it is a natural product too. It sure is a better idea then my Pinesol idea!
