Has anyone ever tried to shoot sabots from a 1:48 twist. I know...I know "you are not aloud to shoot sabots from a 1:48" But who made that LAW?? What if?? Just want to know if anyone has tried it.

Thanks

Sure, TC Maxi's have shot pretty accurately for me as far as shooting to the same point of impact as a patched round ball (PRB). When I used sabots for hunting, I would have PRB's ready for an easier reload and a quicker follow up shot.
Most gun makers promote the idea of the versatility of the 1 in 48 twist barrels for obtaining fairly good accuracy with both PRB's and conical bullets (and sabots). There's not a 1 in 48 myth against shooting sabots that I'm aware of anyway.
Sometimes the right sabot/bullet combination will allow you to use both a larger and more powerful powder charge while still achieving better accuracy than some 1 in 48 twist rifles can provide with an equivalent powder load and a PRB.
So it could result in you having both a little more accuracy and confidence in taking a longer range shot. But you probably don't want to use a bullet that's too heavy; lighter, short to medium length ones might be more accurate.

A guy at my club was telling me how wonderful sabots were and suggested I try a few shots with my T/C 1:48. He gave me ten to try. They shot all over in the 10, 9, and 8 rings. I was so disappointed, I never even tried it again. I can do tens at 25 yds with round balls and at a much lower costs than sabots.

Just my experience, your milage may vary.

I've tried it. Can't say I'm overly impressed.

So far, with all of my 1/48 .50 barrels I get the best accuracy with a 360gr Minnie Ball. Period.

While I know that I am the limiting factor in most accuracy issues, I am just more consistant with the heavy minnies than PRB or sabot.

Are we talking Sabots or conicals. Sabots I've used MMP and Harvesters in my .54 cal holding a .45 hardcast pistol bullet. I've have very good luck with 2F 95 grns. 1.5"-2" at 100 yards.

We are talking sabots out of a CVA MT Rifle 32" barrel w/ a 1:48 twist. Not conicals or power belts or PRB. I want to know if you have and what the grouping was. I wish they had not moved this thread. I shoot power belts now and have a hard time with them "working" mushrooming on deer past 40yds. I was just wondering about sabots.

I have used the T/C 3 piece sabot in my Lyman Deerstalker, and found them very accurate. I took 2 whitetails with them before returning to the round ball. I did not like cleaning out the plastic, and much prefer the round ball.
