i got started to day on my GPR and wow! right off i discoveredthat the tang wsnt inleted correctly and the hole for the screw was missalligned. once i got that corrected the touch hole on the barrel lined up in the pan perrfect! pics soon to follow

I never knew why they had to put the gaudy scroll work on the lock plates on these guns, when a nice flat smooth one would look way better!

I have the same gun in .54, and aim to change that!

you know i couldnt agree more! heck there just doesnt seem to be anything you can do with it either. well its 5:30 am here on my mountian and i got my coffee on and im making my plan for the work on the rifle! i'll post pics again this after noon. :thumbsup:

There's a big reason why there's kits and finished rifles. The kit was too screwed up to make a finished rifle without a ton of work. I've had both in the GPR...kit and factory...

A long time ago I bought a Tryon back action rifle. Pedrosoli I think...I got it cheap because it set in the gun shop for three years and nobody wanted it. Blued furniture and barrel. The brass was shiny and the wood was plain. So...instead of 795.00 I got it for 250.00 and he paid the tax. I took it home...and if you know me you know I'm not a "if it ain't broke ...don't fix it" kinda guy. I took it apart and started messin with it...Skunk spray...from a real skunk will take bluing off a barrel like you wouldn't believe and it doesn't mess up the corners of the octagon. Hot browned the barrel...(improvement #1). Then I noticed that the wood in the barrel inlet was pretty fancy but it didn't show up on the outside. Turns out that there was a really thin layer of putty on the whole stock and what looked like a photo finish was put on that. I used paint stripper and removed that mess and just wooled it to take off the raised grain. no stain...just beeswax and linseed oil...heat up the stock and rub it in by hand. If it hurts it's hot enough. (Improvement #2). That European walnut was full of color and curl. Built a different trigger guard (Improvement #3) and wandered over to the gunshop where I bought it...John the smith said it was the prettiest gun he'd ever seen and did I want to sell it...and then I told him what it was. I didn't go back in there for a while. I shot it at a couple of shoots and traded it for a Hawkin copy. 795.00 asking price...not bad.

got the stock all sanded to day and tomorrow i'll do the whisker sanding. and i started polishing out the metal parts today! i think i'm going to go with a viniger finish. i'll post a few pics in the morning (for got to take a couple of progress pics) also my new kit showed up to day! an isaac haines lancaster from tip curtis. what a BEAUTIFUL piece of wood! i'll post one or two of it also!

How long have they had the scroll work?, is it only on the flintlocks? I did a caplock kit several years ago and don't recall that scrollwork, I sanded down the case color and browned the lock.

Of course Lyman is Investarms, who also make the Cabelas Hawkens. Every flinter that was a Lyman has the scroll work from what I see.

The percussion Lyman does not have scroll work, but the percussion Cabelas does :hmm:

Either way, I think it looks like manure! I really think the Lyman flintlocks would be much better looking without the scroll work!

There is a company that makes locks for the GPR, so you can get rid of the scroll work!

I still have the scroll lock on my GPR .54 flinter, and I really need to change it!

thanks for the heads up on L&R locks i think i'll order one next week! i like the idea of being able to up grade to something a little more real. i may look into better triggers at the same time.

You can also order them from Track of The Wolf. I did notice that they sell side plates. I wonder if you can just swap the side plates, but I doubt it!

i thought i would post a couple of pics on how my GPR is doin. i finished with the metal parts, and today i'll be whisker sanding the stock and hopefully staining. followed by oiling this week.
