Apparently it wasnt a common pistol due to the early caliber version made for .35 .42. .55

Since those were somewhat uncommon calibers during the civil war, later it was made for .44 (and .36?) , but too late to really make an impact in the war

Seems like a 9 rd cylinder and a shotgun style (Some sources say 20 ga, some 16ga), one shot wouldve been a hit.

Was timing and the original uncommon calibers keep this pistol from being as famous as the others in the Civil War, or were there quality issues?

One problem is they are rather heavy. This is a second model made in France, proved in London.

Agreed, they shoot fine, although I've never tried wearing mine in a holster.

One thing I have noticed is that the cylinder shots are underpowered, compared to my Colt or Remingtons. The cylinder is shorter than a "regular" .44, so you don't get much powder under the ball. And use a loading stand, that side mounted ram is very weak.

Lastly, don't ever, and I mean EVER, take the side plate off. The spring is two piece, and it's a real bear to get back in place.
