i Was in Iowa turkey hunting a number of years ago. we stayed in a cabin in a little town. There were these blond fox squirrels running around. Talking to some locals, they said they were common in town. Pretty cool.

If I were you I think I'd have to make a trip to Wally world. I'd get two or three elcheapo crossbow bolts and some cheap field points. Then when the squirrel temptation is too strong while deer hunting I might pop one or two with the cheap stuff. Just a thought. Congrats on the deer. Here I is.
Fellas, the last couple of weeks I've been taking a break from my beloved squirrel hunting and focusing on bow hunting (crossbow nowadays due to a destroyed shoulder). Need to get at least two deer in the freezer then I can slack off a bit and get after some squirrels, for a day or two anyway. So far I've only brought home one deer. Trail cams prove that most deer remain nocturnal at this time. In addition, not all but some of my happy hunting grounds is also my squirrel hunting grounds. So gotta play it cool for a while.
However, I do have a squirrel report for you for this neck of the woods.
Squirrel activity is fairly heavy and wide spread. Been spending a bunch of time in the woods/mountains and everywhere I go I see squirrels. Not only in the woods but on the roads as well. Squirrel population is good to say the least.
Just about every kind of nut and mash is being eaten at this time by our little furry friends. Hickories (what few trees has nuts remaining on them) beech, dogwood, and all the other trees that squirrels eat on. However, as of last week they are also finally cutting on walnuts.
I have sat in both, up in tree stands or out in my ground blind while bow hunting the last couple of weeks and most sits I have have squirrels raining down pieces of nut shells on my head. So may times when I wasn't getting any deer activity its all I could do to sit there and take it. I felt like Elmar Fudd.
Several times I have put the crosshairs on the little buggers sitting out in front of me. But, a squirrel is not worth blowing the deer hunt over and its certainly not worth the chance of losing a $25.00 - $30.00 arrow and broadhead.
To sum this up, its to my belief that for this area in KY, with the enormous nut crop, as well as squirrels a plenty, next season there should boo-coo's of squirrels to hunt. Hopefully by early season squirrel hunt here, and with my new replacement knee scheduled to be installed December, I will be in shape to get after those little gray furry woodland creatures come next May when season opens. With as many squirrels as there are here at this time, as well as the great amount of food for them to stock up in for the winter, Its looking good for an eventful early spring hunt with my Crockett Squirrel Rifle.
Ha, that's a thought for sure. But then I'd still be making noise from shooting and cocking the crossbow, and lots of movement from a tree stand anyway. Then there's the dead squirrel to take care of.If I were you I think I'd have to make a trip to Wally world. I'd get two or three elcheapo crossbow bolts and some cheap field points. Then when the squirrel temptation is too strong while deer hunting I might pop one or two with the cheap stuff. Just a thought. Congrats on the deer.
Man, that thing is purdy. I'd love to have one of those on the wall, along side a black one and an albino. And of course a gray squirrel as well.i Was in Iowa turkey hunting a number of years ago. we stayed in a cabin in a little town. There were these blond fox squirrels running around.
